Help - Can't Remove Screws from Cab
« on: October 16, 2004, 06:20:57 pm »
This is rather embarrassing, but I picked up a Sega Aerocity a couple days ago and found that I don't have a tool that can remove the screws from the back so I can access the monitor.  They are really small with a hex shape, but have a pin in the middle, so a hex key won't work (there would need to be a hole in the middle).  I managed to get one screw out with a pair of pliers, and at both Lowes and Home Depot the employees said they had never seen anything like it.   There are a ton of tools listed at Happcontrols, but they don't show the ends so I can't tell if they would work, and I'm not sure on the size to order anyway (is there a standard size for these?).

Can someone point me towards the right screwdriver, online or somewhere (preferrably) that I can pick up locally so I can work with my cabinet?

That is a security torx head screwdriver and you can just drill the center out if it's not the hardened steel kind.....couldn't get the direct link to work but just go to www.happcontrols.com, in the search box, type torx......click on first listing.....don't know what size screw you have, but you may want to pick up a few...there not that much.....here's a pic for ya

Good Luck..

If you want it immediately, Sears sells a driver with a bunch of swappable security tips for $20.

Try MCM Electronics
at www.mcmelectronics.com and do a search on security bit

Here's the set I picked up.   You might want to check to see if it contains the exact size you need.

Thanks so much for the help!  Not much more frustrating than having a cabinet sitting in my room for a week that I can't touch because of a screwdriver...

take the screw you did manage to get out to the auto parts store...they may have that size with the hole in the center...I had to get something similar to those when changing my ignition in my car....worth a shot....

I picked up a 4 piece set of security torx screwdrivers at Lowes not too long ago. Stanley made them, and they were sold as regular torx screwdrivers, but they have the hole for the security pins.

If you are good... you can also carve a slot for a flat head screwdriver in the screw by using a dremel.

Or... sometimes if the screw head is not too deep... you can use a visegrip locking pliers to grab the head and turn it.
