Using a mouse in a gun hack???
« on: October 08, 2004, 09:22:12 am »
I have heard that there is such a thing as a mouse hack that lets you take a light-gun(just the casing pretty much) and replace the internal parts w/ parts of a mouse somehow to get an optical type of gun for games like T2. I was wondering if anyone has tried this, does it exist, how does it work, etc. Thanks.

Nononononononono

1) T2 games are NOT light gun games... They can be easily hacked to a joystick... either Daves analog board (aki) or 1ups dualstrike hack.

2) Lightguns can not be hacked in any way to a mouse.  You CAN hack an actlabs gun into a real arcade gun.. but most who have tried killed their actlabs guns...

but no... wrong technologies...

I know that T2 was not a light gun game, it used a gun that functioned as a mouse or joystick though. What I am wondering is, how can I get the same type  of setup to where it is still a gun that you are using(not a joystick, mouse, or trackball) but it uses the joystick/mouse hack technology? It just wouldn't be the same on the mame cab playing T2 with a joystick or a trackball and no gun.

I think I know what you mean...but Lilwolf already explained...

Basically T2 etc. guns were effectively an analog joystick which looked like a gun.  So you can either get a T2 gun and interface to your PC (AKI or Dual Strike hack etc.), or get an analog joystick and stick a gun case onto it (!).  Either way it might be difficult to calibrate the movement of the gun to the relative on-screen sight - possible tho.

I hope you don't mean that.

A mouse, I don't think, could be hacked as a lightgun, they are different technologies.  It's like expecting to peel a coconut like an apple.

I follow you now. Do you have a link for the aki or dualstrike hack?

www.1uparcade.com for the duel strike hack.  Though any joystick can be used, this is a good idea to show you what needs to be done.

The dual strike hack looks interesting, but as of this moment there are no T2 guns on ebay. I suppose I'll have to keep checking back on this. What type of analog joystick would work well then if it comes down to me just getting 2 guns and placing them on the analog joystick?
