MAME Cabinet Worth/Estimate
« on: October 05, 2004, 04:00:18 pm »
I'm cosidering selling my Mame cabinet both to free up living space, make some money, and because I rarely make use of it. It was definitely more of a see-if-I-could project than something I'm hell bent on keeping.

Its not a pressing issue, but I'm wondering how much anyone thinks it is worth / how much you all think I may be able to sell it for.

Anyways, I don't have any really new pictures at the moment, but there are some pictures before i finished it a little bit down my page here: www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=bboge .

Specs:

27inch TV
Awesome looking backlit marquee
Black glass bezel
Brand new Happs Coin Door
2.2Ghz Athlon / 1GB Mem 40GB HD back-end computer (which i would include)
Happs trackball, Oscar spinner, Controls as pictured. (with i-pac & opti-pac)

(some pictures of the controls and coin door on on earlier posts you can see by hitting next)

The remainder of the cab has been stained (matching the control panel). It is built out of oak veneered plywood, and the edges are all covered with black t-molding.

It's pretty much a work of art (or an art of very much work, depending on how you look at it). =) I mean it seriously looks like a piece of furniture.

Any thoughts?

It's certainly a nice looking cabinet. I'm no expert, but it seems like these things generally sell for about $1,000 to $1,500.

The TVs probably $300, the controls are at least another $200, wood only would cost about $200, computer is probably $300 or more, so you're talking an easy $1000 for starters if someone wanted to build it themselves. So, to the right buyer, it'd be worth a lot more than that.

From what I have seen, unless you can find that one right buyer, they usually go for the sum of their parts.  In other words, add up what you've put into it and thats likely what you can expect to get out of it.

Damn, I must have gotten lucky then.
I sold my cab for $2500 canadian about a month ago.  I didn't even list it as for sale, someone saw the web page and emailed me about it.  My cab was similar, 27" TV 2.5Gzh P4, 40GB drive, 512M RAM, I had a trackball, but no spinner.

Now I gotta plan what I want to do for my next cabinet.

I'd say 1500-2000 (with customer support) i.e. give the guy a hand if he needs it but that doesn't man you are on call or anything...

I've been thinking of selling mine (http://webpages.charter.net/celamantia/mamecab), but it's so basic I doubt I'd get much for it...

I sold one just as "basic" for $850 CDN (I'd list ot for 1000 and see what you get) Be wary of the people that don't appreciate the time, skill and effort it takes to make one of these.

On this board we are relative "experts" compared to the general public so we take their construction for granted sometimes.
