Identify this cabinet: Taito --> It's QIX!

Introductions: First time poster, long time mamer.

So I picked up a very stripped cab, and am curious what it was. Something tells me it was made by Taito ...   Everything inside and out was painted black, there was a sticker on the back that was painted over, all I can make out is a hand written "L355". It was completely stripped except for a 1942 control panel (not original) and coin door. I assume this was some sort of generic cab.

FYI, I'm using this for a mame conversion, I've got it working with a redesigned keyboard/joyport hacked control panel, marquee and powered by a smokin' P2-350 with 64 MB ram! I'm running Mame32 37b.14 (yup, before the renumbering system LOL). I just need a glass bezel and it will look complete. I'll post some pics and details in the projects section later on.

I have one just like it in my garage.  Reworked and ready to go as a classics cab.  

Mine was originally a Qix, then converted to Zoo Keeper, and ended as a SilkWorm before I MAMed it.

I had one just like that also that I believe started as a Jungle King. It was painted over on the sides though. I believe Taito used that shape on MANY of their games. Good luck.

Qix.  That's the same as mine (that I got from J_K_M_A_N).  I peeled off some of the paint and have the same coloring.

The Zarzon is the 1st generation cab AFAIK.

Thanks, it is Qix! I had no clue what it was.

Nannuu, thanks for the link, that is a great site -- all those cabs are similar except for colours. I was able to Google for the bezel glass size and found it within minutes. The glass is the last piece of the puzzle so that it looks authentic! (21.5" x 22.3" in case anyone is interested).

There does seem to be several people already giving dimensions and images, but if I can help out, I will. I can also take pictures of the sideart.  I'm quite impressed with this cab, the 'feel' is very nice, the angles ideal.

My cab conversion is almost complete (functionally, but it ain't pretty -- paint and looks come last!). I wanted the look to remain authentic, with a simple CP. It is a fighting style CP, 2 player, 6 buttons each. P1 and P2 start are below the CP on the front. I'm not familiar with Doc's method. I am planning on a removable CP, so I can put in another with a trackball and spinner. That is some time away though.

I'll be posting pictures here in projects section in the next couple weeks, you can see what I've done then.

That cabinet was used for a large handful of games, not just Qix.  Another option is Elevator Action.  Basically, there is really not a single game that cabinet was made for.  It was a generic Taito (but a cool one!).

A very cool idea. I want some plexi over the CP, so the modular wouldn't work. I want to have two swappable CP's, one with the fighter style, one with a trackball and spinner. Maybe another CP with 4 way's. lol. I want to be able to walk up to it and have it look exactly like an old machine -- no doubts about it. There are too many 'Frankencabs" out there that have 10 different controls on one panel and IMHO it looks terrible. But most people like that, and to be honest, it does make it very playable. But I'm also going for a certain look here.

I am a touch sad reading this thread tonight.  I just sold my little Taito cab this afternoon.  I had set it up for a "classics" MAME cab (1 stick, 2 fire, 2 starts, Enter, Exit, and vertical monitor).  A guy bought it for $150 to finish out himself.  He and his wife seemed excited, but now I miss my little friend.....

I was happy to introduce a new person to the wonderful world of emulated classic gaming though.  I guess this means I have to buy some more cabs at the next auction....
