*unofficial* Win98SE service pack and MAME
« on: October 03, 2004, 12:56:49 pm »
I'm currently running Windows 2000 on my mame cabinet but I'm going to switch back to Windows 98SE.  I was wondering if anyone has had problems using the *unofficial* Win98SE service pack with MAME or Mamewah...

We use it on a few old machines where I work and it doesn't seem to cause any problems.  However, we don't run MAME at work. :)

I've used it on my machine with no problems. It's basically all the latest windows updates lumped together plus a few extras such as XP icons.

However, it didn't solve a USB problem I have. When I download pictures from my digital camera using the supplied software (Fuji), the computer sometimes hangs.  However, if I ignore the supplied software and treat the camera as a storage device, and just copy the pictures to my hard disk I don't have any problems.

does this solve the 135 gig hd limit?   i installed 250 gig hds before the update - so had to partition them to the limit,  thus loss of much space.

Although many of the limitations imposed by the FAT 32 file system are outlined above, this particular limitation is actually imposed by one of the disk tools included with Microsoft Windows

You should be able to split them into two partitions, each less than 137BG, and not lose any space in windows 98.

However you need:

a) Hardware that supports LBA48 addressing.  Usually via an add-in card like the Promise Ultra100 TX2.

b) Software that will let you create partitions on very large drives.  Usually the software that comes with the drive.
