Rotary Joystick Question
« on: October 02, 2004, 07:30:56 am »
Just wanted to get some input from the people who've installed LS30 (original SNK) rotary joysticks.  I believe I have the parts to make one complete stick, but need some diagrams, etc to be sure.  Also, is that little L-S 30 wrench absolutely needed, or does someone have a better way to disassemble the sticks?  Any info will be helpful, as I would like to have a better understanding before starting this little project (BTW, just won an Ebay auction for the LS30 encoder, so I'll be starting on it soon 8)).

The wrench is it for normal use (I have 2 and have NEVER taken them farther apart then that).  The wrench takes the handles off only.

You will also want to router to be able to mount them.  DO NOT MOUNT THEM  WITHOUT THE THINEST WOOD OR METAL.  If you do... You will find that you cant take them apart... You need enought space under them to put the wrench back in... (Can't remember who had to cut their handle to get it off... sucked)

Thanks for the info on the wrench--I kind of thought that's all it's for anyway.  Unfortunately, I'll have to take the two sticks apart in order to make one (one is missing the 13-pin connector, the other is missing something the other has.  Anyone else have some information concerning the assembly?

Here's the top removal instructions for those without a wrench:

I've got an LS-30 with a bent shaft, are you going to have an extra shaft when you're done?

Thanks for the link.  Unfortunately, one of the two shafts that I have is also bent, which happens to be the stick that is mostly complete.  OK, that gets me started--how about after I remove the knob?  I need to know for sure if I have all of the parts that composed the stick.  Does anyone have a diagram or exploded view pic, specifying the individual parts?  Maybe I'm just thinking too much...

I have the manual for Time Soldiers and Heavy barrel so I checked and the exploded diagram is there - BUT my scanner has long since been disconnected from my falling apart PC so I did some searching and found an Ikari 3 manual.

Check page 16

Bourne-  Bummer about the bent shaft.  I just scanned the stick diagram from my S.A.R. - Search And Rescue manual, but I see Druin beat me to the punch on that one.  I guess if you have trouble with the .pdf for some reason, I can e-mail it to you.

BTW, it looks like we both got our encoders from the same auction- check the bidders list!

I scored two of those.

Druin- the encoders in that auction are yours, right?  Can we get the missing chip to make 'em work on both channels?

That's funny. Yeah that's my interface. I vaguely recall selling them for a psychology experiment...maybe I was one of the subjects....

Yeah I can sell a programmed chip to go on the other channel, provided that's all that's missing.  Every time I assemble a 1 player unit, they may be a little different on the vacant side, if I already had a full-unit pre-assembled without the chips, I may just sell that, othertimes I may just assembly the player 1 side alone.

Sweet- thanks!

I'll email you when they arrive, so I can inspect them and see if they appear to be complete apart from the chip.

Yep, that's me.  Interesting how at least three of the four people involved in the sale/purchse of the boards are also members here...and involved on the same topic.  Druin--thanks for the board and the manual--I'm sure this will help out alot.  BTW, I probably won't want to mess with the player 2 side, as I'll be happy just to get one complete stick and have it working.  If I'm successful, I might give the extra parts away, if someone needs them.

Oh, thought of another question--can you use standard replacement parts (i.e. springs, c-clips, etc.), or are they special-order stuff, and if so, where can you get them, other than buying another unit?

Ok--I was able to "build my own LS30 tool" and got the knob off in no time at all.  I know, this doesn't sound good...Anyway, I took it completely apart, replaced the necessary parts, and put it back together.  Now the hardest part is getting the damn C-clip back on.  I've tried with pliers, and anything else I could think of, but it's stubborn.  Has anyone found an easy way to put this back on?

P.S. Kremmit--I may end up having that extra shaft you were looking for--I ended up having to use the one that was bent (luckily, it was only at the top, and just slightly).  I'll keep you posted as to whether I'll need it or not...
