Reusing Stencils question
« on: September 24, 2004, 09:25:13 am »
Ok, Reading about someone who is trying to save some defender sideart / stencil.  I came up with an idea.

So the question.  Could you produce a stencil that would work well and be very reusable (and cleanable)?  I'm assuming that if you made one with a nice think plastic... you could really do a good job in reusable sideart stencils.

Ok, so if we could have some made... That could be reused.  Could we start a stencil library?

So someone creates a stencil for a specific game.  He pays like 150 bucks or so...  Then uses it and cleans it.

Then he sells it through here for $125 +shipping.  So now he just got new sideart for $25 bucks.

Next person uses it and trys to sell it for $100.  (or we could drop the price).

But here is the catch.  Try to keep all unused ones in a single location.  And if it isn't sold again in a set amount of time... The person who has it sends it back to the 'library'.   The next time someone needs that stencil, they would buy it from the library... And the librarian would send the money to the last person who had it.

After 4 people use it... hopefully we would have it paid off... Or sooner if people donate their stencils since it should be cheaper then new sideart after the first or second use.

Then we would sell it at replacement cost... and buy it back at full price.  Just to make sure that they don't just keep them.

So what do you think?

Or another way to do it (financially that is) could be this.

I create the stencils.  I use it myself... Then I send it to the 'librarian'.

Next... The librarian sells them for the replacement price to the first person... And buys it back for 25 less and sends it to the original owner.  And keeps doing it until the original paid off (or more if that might make some money for people making the stencil... especially since it would require more work the first time creating / converting the artwork).

So you could have many people using the stencils for about 25 bucks + shipping x2

why bother with stencils? couldn't you do the same thing these days with those laser cut vinyl sign makers?

Because sometimes vinyl doesn't look as authentic as a good ole stencil would.

But you can't share those.

If you could use a pre-existing stencil for 25bucks + shipping?

If it ended up paying for itself... then just shipping?

I'm saying is that I bet that it wouldn't cost that much more to create the stencils then the vinyl...   But these can be reused.

IF I can't recover the sideart on my defender cab. then finding a stencil will be my next option.
