Plexiglass or Lexan
« on: September 20, 2004, 01:26:51 pm »
Hi,

for the marquee & in front of the monitor(tv in my case) would you suggest plexiglass or lexan? Also, what are the exact differences? Will either affect using a light gun?

thanks.

Plexi has a harder surface and wont scratch up as fast as lexan.  Lexan will crack if too much pressure is put on in.   A bit tricky to cut without cracking it.  (look for plexi tips in the archives)

lexan scratches easy... but has greater flexibility and strength... so will not crack from cutting or impact.

I think they both have about the same clarity.

Id go with plexi because its greater resistence to scratching.

However... if you think someone will punch the screen when angered... then maybe lexan is a better choice.

You mean Plexi?

Lexan is bulletproof.

I had Lexan over my TV, but an unfortunate mishap with a can of Goof Off made me replace it with Plexi. Whatever you do NEVER spray Goof Off on your Plexi or Lexan. It will eat the top layers and ruin it.

Never use ANY orange/citrus type cleaner (typical components of "Goo" removal items) on any type of plastic, regardless of the name of the plastic. It will cloud, soften and whiten them.

To remove stickers and what not from plastic without ruining it, use "Electronic contact cleaner". Make sure the can specifically says safe for plastics.  I use the GB stuff from a home improvement sttore and it works great. It's NOT the same as "Electrical contact cleaner"

Also, if you do use a citrus based cleaner on plastic, you can remove most of the clouding using Novus 1 / 2 / 3 kit.  I recovered a totally opaque piece of plastic covering an old flourescent handheld game (so bad you couldn't read the score).  It didn't look like new, but was quite clear when done. More work or with a tool could have helped make it better.
