Mini Power Minder <--Here's a new Smart Strip alternative!
« on: September 15, 2004, 04:25:14 pm »
Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is a brand new item or not, but check it out:

The Mini Power Minder - Only $16!

http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/6ee4/

This thing accomlishes the same thing as the Smart Strip except it does it through USB and is not an entire power strip.

It's just a connection with two power outlets on it.  One connection is always on no matter what.  The other connection is the switched connection.  This is where you would plug in your normal everyday power strip.

How does the switch activate?  The Mini Power Minder also has a USB input port on it.  You run a USB cable from your computer to the Mini Power Minder.  When your computer shuts off, power stops flowing through the USB connection, thus turning off the switched outlet.

This is quite brilliant in my opinion.  The original Smart Strip had problems because it's switched outlet was dependant on the power running through other special outlet.  This had some flaws as we know.  But this Mini Power Minder just works off the USB cable.  It's either gonna be on or off.

And at only $16 it's a great buy!  I'm definaltey gonna be using this on my next cabinet!

Wish this existed/I had known about it before I put together my own auto switching, USB controlled power strip...

Would have saved myself like $15 and a few hours of work!  GRRR.  Oh well, I might just get one of these things, it looks pretty cool.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen
