is this a usefull Mamecabinet?
« on: September 14, 2004, 08:12:13 pm »
Hi all,
got a question:
Is this arcade machine a good one to get , to transfer it to a Mame Cab?
Anyone know what cab it is originally(Virual...?)?
Would I need a Arcade VGA graphics card?
Or is it possible to get the monitor working without that from a computer?
Have never thought of getting my hands on a real cab, thats why I ask this n00b monitor question... ;-)
Back to business:
i would take the cp off and replace it with my controls that are on the way.
the guns i would try to use, dont know if that is possible though...
Thanx for ur help and opinions!
(Make up my mind on this one ;-)

Wow, what a crazy looking setup.

The 2 guns kinda scream Virtua Cop to me, although it could really be anything I guess!

I think it'd make a cool MAME cab with bit'o tweaking tho.

Good luck!!=)

Oh god, I hope when you say you are taking the controls off to replace them with "the ones on the way" I hope you're not talking about an X-Arcade or similar!

there are some people here happy with their x-arcade controller. it seems like it riles up most people tho when someone says so though. anyways someone can always build a control panel later once they feel more comfortable with the idea.

Hey I have an X-arcade controller and love it!   It does just what I need it to do.  I built my cabinet from scratch and just popped one in.  Works great!  Now the funny thing is I bought an empty cabinet and plan on building my own controller for that cabinet.  I already have a keywiz and Ultimarc 4-8way joystick that's switchable from the top of the control panel, a USB trackball and some buttons!

LOL. I am owned by no X-Arcade.

The sad thing is, for PC use, you can build a MUCH finer arcade stick than an X-Arcade dual for alot less cash.

Sticks (2) - $40
Buttons  (14) - $30
Encoder (IPAC VE) - $40
Little bits of wire and wood - maybe $10
The feeling of being "1337" enough to BYOAC.... Priceless.

Okay, maybe not ALOT less, but that's not exactly bargain shopping either.

I gotta admit tho, for console use, those X-Arcade's encoder things are pretty smooth once you've swapped out the cheap buttons and stick, and installed them into a larger CP. I might get one someday for "modificating" if I can find one cheap enough. Right now I'm just hacking apart Pelican Real Arcade sticks and "enhancing" them. Soon my cab will have console panels! MUAHAHAHA! =)

Ummm... ahem. Back onto topic, see earlier post.

Funny looking cab there, that it is. =)

No, I dont want to replace ithe cp with an X-Arcade.
The stuff thats on the way is
3 joysticks
1 illuminated trackball 3'
19 buttons + 2 player buttons
and the ipac is here allready =)

That all i would put on a new cp and put that where the guns are(if possible)
The guns would be hung onto the cabinet or put into holsters.(dont think that i will get them to run on the ipac, so its something for the future)
Originally I wanted to built the cab myself, but i found this one and its cheap as hell!!!
So u think it would be possible to use it as an Mame machine?!?
I havent got a clue what is working in the machine.
I hope a lot that the monitor is still alive.
that would be sweet !!!
If not, I will rip it out and go with a pc monitor or a TV(but I found that my grafic card doesnt do the job very well on S-VHS =( )
So if there are more opinions, keep them coming, i have another 3 hours to decide...
Thanx for the preposts!

@ Gunstar: what tweaks would u give it, other that a new controllpanel, Marquee and side- and cpart?

I can't speek for this specific cab, but I have a very similar cab (same base and control panel) but with a slightly different shape to the top. The one I have has a WG monitor and is wired with JAMMA. Of course there's no way to tell for sure, unless you look inside.

well, to me it looks more and more usefull, even if the monitor is dead, it shouldnt be a problem to replace it with a TV or PC mointor.
I think i will go for it, as i would never get all the wood and other stuff it has for that cheap a price.
The Jamma and stuff is not in the machine anymore....
But I didnt want to use that anyway(at least not yet anyway, just want a PC for the time being)
In case the monitor runs, I would have to egt an ArcadeVga card? wouldnt I?
Keep the comments coming for the next 2 hours ;-)

Trillian: No, you don't HAVE to get an ArcadeVGA card, but what I would have done in your place is get a JPAC instead of IPAC. The JPAC takes any PC video signal and "limits it" so only arcade monitor resolutions are permitted through. As well, it's an easy connection to a JAMMA cabinet....

I'd say that's perfect for mame..

you'll have to remove the stickers, and create a new top with joysticks/buttons (simple to do).

Heck, just selling those 2 guns and what ever board is inside can pay for all the other parts and might even pay for the PC as well!

But I wouldn't use this cab if you're looking to make a retro 80's one.. only 90's +

I like the looks of it and the cp should fit all the stuff that I named above =)
As there is no jamma, there is only the 2 guns and the monitor, which could be a good deal, but i guess i will keep them and try whatever there is to do to make them work with a PC and Mame...
i dont mind that this cab doesnt have the old retro style looks.
It will be a Mean Mame Machine ;-)

Its here =)
I got it today, even was shot by the police(speeding camera ;-)
So I will have a nice pic for the bezel =)
Anyway, I took out the monitor and the cp off.
All nice and easy to remove =)
Cleaned the in and outside and now it sits here next to me....
Damn that the buttons etc. where only shipped last week, now it will be a pain waiting ;-)
The cp should fit all the stuff.
It has a nice metal front, where the speakers are and the Virtual Game writing is ment to be lit red.
the Bezel is in a white plastic covering that u just stick over the wood construction on top.
Alltogether this will be a very nice  Mame cab in the end!
Will keep u up...

For u monitor guys, I will be asking in the monitor thread what tip i have, so if u can help, feel free ;-)
Thanx for all the support!

post that speeding camera pic dude :-)

it' would be good for a giggle or two....  but it sucks getting hit for speeding, fight it!   You can always say that it wasn't you buying that strange cabinet at that time, the one you have you bought years ago :-)
