Hey 1UP, where did you find small springs for your spinner hack?

Think there would be and small springs tough enough for a ddr pad?

Home built pads use weather stripping.  I tried my friends but it just doesn't feel right.

I don't think my springs would work for you.  I used some spare springs I took from my coin return buttons.  Some hardware stores have springs (look where they have hardware for gates, or in the fasteners section).  I'm not sure, but radio shack might have spring assortments or something.  All of mine are just spare parts.

BTW, I'm not going to keep using the spinner hack.  It doesn't make sense to mess with balancing the springs and tweaking the switch tolerance for a piece of hardware that works for only one game.  I'm going to try placing the start buttons to either side of my spinner, so they can be used as up/down buttons during the game.

I've tried installing buttons next to my spinner for the up and down, but it just doesn't work.  I can't aim the crosshair up and down and move it left and right at the same time.  Looking at your setup, have you ever thought of using the 'HAT' on your joystick for the up and down?  I'm sure you are using one of the directions as 'Shield', but you could use the up and down for this I would think.

Just my two cents.  Let us know how it works for you.

Well, my joysticks don't have a hat switch, just the trigger and thumb button.  And they are going to be replaced with dual Tron joysticks as soon as Arcade Renovations gets their act together.  I guess I could hack a hat switch onto one stick.  I thought of putting small up/down pushbuttons on the side of the stick, but that would really destroy the look of the stick...  Maybe a rocker switch?

Anyway, I was measuring my CP and thought that if I put the start buttons directly to the left and right of the spinner, I could still roll the spinner with the side of my index finger, and handle the buttons with my thumb and pinky.  The problem is, my control panel rotates, and when I'm using one of the other sides, the Tron panel is upside down, which causes the spinner to slide downward, giving false keypresses when they're not wanted.  I ended up having to install a cutoff switch to break the ground for the up/down switches, and having to re-calibrate the bottom switch plate every once in awhile because it gets pushed out of alignment when I have the panel upside down.  Plus, the spinner just didn't feel right in other games where it was bobbing up and down all the time rather than being solid.  I have to admit this is one hack that didn't end up being worthwhile.  Just too much trouble for a game I rarely play...
