Custom Arcade Token?!?!?!
« on: September 12, 2004, 12:44:24 am »
We have byoac tokens and mame toekns...is there any intrest in a generic arcade token? My costs will be $195 for the die plus the token costs. The minimum order from the manufac is 1000.  I would want to atleast break even on this.....is anyone interested?
If you want to create a design go ahead and do so.
The back sides are freely avalible and say ""25", "video game token, etc.

CURRENT IDEA: Front side pac man or a wedge shaped characted

Backside something along the lines of good for 1 game 25 cents  or no cash value

Well...

What will the cost be per...say a hundred?

Can you beat or match the price of a mixed bag of tokens that we might see on ebay?

Personally, I am leaning toward the BYOAC tokens.  I already have a sack of Gorrila tokens from TheNasty.

On the other hand, if you can show me a cheaper price point I may be intrested

Just not enough info at this point

I am open to pretty much any design. If enough people preorder (once we have a design finished) I will happily charge you nothing more than my costs from the manufactuer plus shipping. The design will either be done by:
1. A friend
2. By a byoac member
3. The coin minters

If you want "generic" tokens, why not buy the generic tokens rather than making a custom generic?

The BYOAC tokens were minted at TokensDirect; here are their "generic" images:

Selecting stock designs also allows you to do runs as small as 1000 brass tokens.  A thousand brass tokens with generic designs is only $95.00 plus shipping.  (Nickel-plated tokens still have a 10,000 minimum order even for generic designs.)

Happ's generic token looks like this:

They can be ordered in lots as small as 100; they are $17.00 plus shipping for 100 tokens.

OK, I dont want the tokens to have any referance to byoac or mame. I think 1 side of a premade token is fine but I would like one side to be custom made.

Manufac emailed me this
1000 pieces @ $87 + shipping for golden brass, nickel
plated is $20 more.

It'll be a challenge to come up with generic art that doesn't look like generic art!  You may want to look at the Token Museum at http://www.gooddealgames.com/Token_Museum.html for ideas.

True.  But if someone (i suppose it would be itismejs in this case)  has the spheres to put some classic arcade characters (like pacman) on there without worrying about the legal aspect of it I think it will be plenty sweet.
SO...if the artwork kicks arse, I'm in.  For instance pac on one side and atari guy on other??  Of course with other cool detail which i am too artistically challenged to dream of.

Yep.  Believe me, I understand the choice not to.  I wouldn't do it personally unless it was a private run just for me.  Of course before I had anything to lose it would be no problem.  Thats the problem with spheres and brains...they are in constant conflict with one another. ;D

Hey... I already sent a email to namco asking permission to use the pacman logo. I was gonna wait for there reply before I even mentioned it. I was reading about how other toghut that pacman tokens where a good idea.

If namco is like FU, I will give up that idea and create a random wedge shapped figure.

Don't forget Namco has their own tokens... they probably will think you're counterfieting theirs!  :O

I was thinking more of a  http://www.uni-passau.de/icons/pacman.gif or ingame pacman. If you dont hear from me assume namco sued me and I no longer have $$$ to pay for internet.

Isn't there a couple hundred dollar die fee for the custom side? If not that's so cheap I'm gonna make some custom ones themed for my cab.  ;)

As far as a "wedge shaped figure" I assume you mean a circle with a pie shape cutout. You may as well use whatever Pac Man reference you want in that case, since if your design is recognizable as a Pac Man reference or can even be construed as such, it won't make any difference to Namco and they'll be just as likely to tell you to stop. We rolled this over and over between the powers that be when the favorite for the front (or is it the back?) of the BYOAC token was the Pac Man design. Ultimately we decided it was a bad idea primarily because the token was traceable to the website. If you mint a personal collection with no profit motive I doubt you have much to fear legally, just like if you were to print pac man on a marquee. But that's just me.

How about you let itismejs use your rocket-sprocket logo for his custom "generic" side, with no text, use one of the standard generic backs; he has his "generic" tokens, you have your cab-themed tokens, and everyone's happy!

In fact, I think you should bling that.  Rocket-sprocket would look great on a token!

Just checked the Tokens Direct site.. 'cause I REALLY wanted some custom Mission Control tokens  :P

Custom tokens require 5000 minimum order... $380 DOH!!!
Die fee for each custom side...$195 DOH!! DOH!!!

So it'd be $575 for a one custom side/one generic (mint) side token run or $770 for a two custom side run. So no Mission Control tokens for me.

Just thought I'd post this since at $87 per thousand there's a lot of additional hidden costs to consider.

Pixelhugger you could allways go with T-001 and T-004.

I bet that your friends wouldn't know they are generic....
