25" Monitor in a 25" cab? Should I do it?
« on: September 07, 2004, 09:03:29 pm »
I have an old Bad Dudes cab that I can just barely squeeze a 25" standard res monitor into. It will take up almost the entire dimension side to side of the cab.

Will it make the cab look funny? Has anyone ever done this? I will put a narrow bezel around the sides. I just can't stand putting a 19" monitor in the cab, I wanted it to be at least 25" so I can play vert. and horz. games.

I am not restoring this back, just mameing it. I will have a slikstick classic on it so to some of  you, it will look funny anyway!   ;D

Dedicated 25" Neo Geo cabs has a monitor that filled the cabinet, it looks fine.

Believe me, no one is going to notice the larger than stock monitor when you have a giant slikstick bolted onto a Data East cabinet that simply has no proper way to take the thing (thos slikstick panels only work looks wise on cabinets that came with control panels wider than the cabinet, basically, 1993 and newer cabinets.

Thanks for the info. I will be putting in the 25" monitor for sure. The large CP will overhang 5" on each side of the cabinet, it will be a frankenpanel no doubt about it.

Now to figure how to bolt it on!  ;D

Well, good luck.

And actually, you shouldn't have to squeeze a 25" in, it should fit without squeezing, as a Bad Dudes cabinet is 24" between the rails and a 25" monitor is a bit less than that.

I think it's actually about 23.75 inches. (I MAMEd one.) The wooden frame makes it easy to install another monitor though. Just cut the frame. However, such a thin wooden frame is probably not a very good idea anyways and you way want to consider building your own out of angle iron or something. This is all in theory, though, because I used a 19" monitor.

And by the way... your original post says:
" 25" Monitor in a 25" cab? "

I took out the wood framing that held in the 19" monitor and will put in some steel brackets to hold the 25" monitor.

AlanS17 do you have any pics of your Bad Dudes cab finished? Would love to see them!

Should I have said a 25" monitor in a 24" cab?  ;D  It's actually over 25" outside dimensions, 23 3/4" inside as you guys mentioned. The 25" will just fit with a 1/4" or less on each side. Thanks for all the info...

I sold it to my fraternity to keep in the house when I moved to Dallas. The only picture I have left is a cheap one taken with a camera phone that really doesn't do it much justice. I'll try to get it on here asap.

Here's the machine (nearly complete) in all it's camera phone darkened pixelated glory.  :P

I took a couple styling cues from the original Street Fighter dedicated cabinets when building the control panel. Plus I wanted to keep the curviness of the cabinet in mind when building the CP.

I tied it all together using the red t-molding as tracing to accentuate the curves and painted the coin door red and added a red speaker grill to match and draw attention away from the control panel which is conseriderably larger than people realize.

Thanks for the picture. That's about what mine will look like with a 35" wide SlikStik on it. I am going to have to trim my cab a bit where it curves out to be able to set the CP where it needs to be.

The SS CP also has a curved front edge and will match the marquee nicely though I don't show it in this sketch. Thanks again.

I say go for it.  I have a centipede cab that I put a 25" in.  The width of the cabinet is 23.75" as well.  It fit great and for mame it rocks, since vertical games are basically the same size as a vertical 19".

Wow that looks great in there! I ordered my WGK7400 yesterday. No word yet on shipping it here.

How did you mount the monitor to the cabinet? Thanks for the pic.

Take note when attatching such a massive control panel. That thing is much longer (front to back) than mine. It sticks pretty far out away from the machine. Weight of the CP itself along with people leaning on it will start to pull it down. With a pivot point only 3 or 4 inches from the back edge, you're left with nearly a 12" lever to push down and tear your control panel up (not to mention whatever mounts you used).

Also, if the thickness isn't taken into serious account you may find yourself with a hole between your CP and the monitor.

Yeah, mounting it will be a real trick. I am going to look at a few options before I jump into and do something that isn't strong enough. It is 17" or so deep.

As far as a hole between the cp and monitor, that's a very real possibility. Something else to work out!   ::)

If my memory serves me correctly, I think mine was either 12" or 15" deep. Can't remember which at the moment. But even at that length, pushing down on the front made a creaking sound... and I had that thing attatched with probably almost 10 large carriage bolts underneath and inside.
