Spy Hunter Question..
« on: September 07, 2004, 08:49:48 am »
hola guys...long time reader...first time poster.  ;)

at any rate, im building my 8 th control panel, and its a spy hunter...steering is great, but the gas pedal is either on or off.  im using 100k pots wired into the joystick port(works great on my star wars yoke) but it seems like mame does not want to recoginize the gas as an analog value(like i said its either on or off) my mame rig in the cab is a 1.4ghz in dos mode so a newer version of mame is out of the question. im using advance mame .67 and have tried analogmame+ .69 dos build but that wont see any of the analaog(100k pot) inputs.

any thoughts? besides shoot myself in the foot?  ;D

Sorry...  the gas works fine using my star wars yoke, but I can't steer with it.  What settings are you using and is it a Twisty Grip yoke you've built?

ok, I've never played with the yokes before... are you using the yoke itself as a gas pedal, or do you have an actual pedal somewhere that you're trying to get working?

Either way, since mame won't accept an analog input on it, try putting in a microswitch that gets triggered whenever your analog device is pushed all the way to max.

*shrug*  That's all I can think of having no idea what you're actually trying to do and being severely sleep deprived.

If, I understand the problem correctly, you have an analog input and you need mame to see it as a digital input.  Is that correct?

If so, JoyToKey can handle that.  If you haven't used it before, it turns joystick inputs into keyboard inputs.  It is very cool.

So what are the settings you are changing if any?

Didnt really have setting i could change.

The only reason im using a star wars yoke is to test using the feasibility of building an actual spyhunter setup.

I have a real spyhunter controller and i can get a pedal that has a switch or a 100k pot.  If i go with the microswitch, as soon as the switch would be closed, the gas pedal would think its floored(max throttle). Once you kick the shifter in high gear(in the game), you are toast in seconds. A pedal with a 100k pot would be optimal if the game would allow the throttle to be vairable based on where the pot is at.  For example, if the pedal is halfway down, the game will see the throttle as only half way down.

Im probably not making a bit of sense...

I under stand your problem... I don't have to worry how fast I'm going, with the way mine turns I can't keep it on the road long enough to worry about speed :p

Good luck finding your answer.

Mame can read analog pedals, but you might need to set it up correctly.

Map your analog pedal/yoke/axis to "P1 Pedal 1 Analog".

Unmap your (same) analog pedal/yoke/axis from "P1 Pedal 1 Dec" and "P1 Pedal 1 Inc"

(You don't really need to do the unmap, but doing so helps tell mame your stick is analog)

I'm not sure how to help you with your problem, but I can tell you that what you want to do will work.

I have a spy hunter setup on my machine.  I can play the game almost as good as in the arcade (still tweaking it).

I have the steering and pedal hooked up to the game port. I started with the standard pots for steering and gears (100k). They weren't sensitive enough. I upped it to 150k... better, but not there yet.  I have new pots to install and they've been sitting in my parts bin for weeks. I think they are 200k or 225k.

Sorry for rambling... but MAME can use analog inputs for both steering and the gas pedal in Spy Hunter. I wouldn't recommend a yoke. It isn't very playable that way.

It sounds like it may not be mapped or set up right. Try what u_rebel says, that should get you up and running.

BTW, I'm still using an older version of MAME, not sure it that matters.  Version .71

Good luck,

Rocky
