Where can I find DEEP CONCAVE buttons??????
« on: September 06, 2004, 05:09:19 pm »
It seems that every pushbutton I have seen has a shallow concave.

Where can I find the old-school "deep dish" style ones?

Does Ultimarc carry them?

Leaf switch buttons are by far the deepest. RandyT at Groovy Game Gear carrys Wico horizontal microswitch pushbuttons which are supposedly slightly deeper then the Happ microswitch buttons. I would ask him to compare his Wico buttons to a Happ button to see if the Wicos are in fact a bit deeper then the Happ ones. If they are then you can buy the Wicos from him but if you're looking for the deepest ones you'll have to use leafswitch buttons.

I haven't seen anybody selling those; I think they went extinct along with 2-d, no ending, non-scrolling games. ;)

I'd troll ebay for "control panel" if I was you.

What you are looking for are definitely leaf switch buttons, which are much deeper than the microswitch ones (although there is no functional reason why they should be, it seems to just be a style change).

I think he's talking about the ones you used to see on some of the really old machines; yes they were leaf buttons, but they were deeper than the ones you get now.

You're missing the point.  Leaf-switch buttons are easy to find, yes.  They are concave, yes.  They are a bit deeper than the ones Happ sells for microswitches, yes.

But I was referring to the specific buttons koolmoecraig was looking for.  If you find an arcade with some really old machines in it, that haven't had all their parts replaced, you might find some with different buttons, as once upon a time, there were other manufacturers, with different molds.  Some of them had deeper concavities than the ones sold at the places you listed.  They stuck up higher above the lip of the button assembly, as well.

Doesn't anybody besides koolmoecraig and I remember these?

Ahh ok.. You're talking about the old Nintendo buttons found in Donkey Kong,DK Junior, Popeye ect.. The old Nintendo buttons sat up REALLY high above the button bezel. The old school Nintendo buttons were actually microswitch operated but they were basically set up just like a regular leafswitch pushbutton. However the button holder was metal instead of plastic and had a lever actuated microswitch instead of a leaf switch. I recently played a Donkey Kong machine down at the Jersey shore and the player two button was original and sat much higher then the player one button which apparently had been replaced. I know exactly what you're talking about now. :) Tom (n2new) is actually reproducing the orange Nintendo buttons for Donkey Kong. I saw them on Ebay recently. He wants like $15.00 a pair :o. If you are restoring a DK then I guess its worth it.

Nintendo's were one different type.  There were others, too- I want to say Stern originally had 'em, but I'm not sure.
