Cabinet width question
« on: September 04, 2004, 03:54:01 pm »
I am going to build a cabinet with a rotating control panel, so I wanted the width to be big enough for me and another person to play comfortably at the same time. I'm 6'2" and most of my friends are big as well. I've cut the pieces to 32" so far, which would make the entire cabinet about 33 1/4" wide when assembled, but I was thinking of trimming them down if that is too big. I'm not concerned about the doorway dimensions, since it'll be going into a room with double doors. However I am worried that a tv won't fill it up well enough, leaving a lot of dead space, or that the ones that will fill it adequately will be too big for the cabinet and overwhelm the player. I haven't bought a tv yet and I was thinking somewhere between 27" and 31" would be the way to go.

Do you think that 32" is too wide for a cabinet, considering that in order to accomodate a wider rotating control panel the cabinet itself needs to be wider?

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

This is a little subjective. Some people don't like being that close to a large screen. Images might not look as clear, and the screen filling peripheral vision has bad effects on some people... Makes them feel queasy or dizzy.

I'd go somewhere that has the screen sizes you're considering (with programs on), get your face the 15-20" you're going to be from the typical cabinet screen and see what you think.

I think 25" is a good size and 27 would be the max I could enjoy on a typical standup cab, but everyone is different. If you have a large amount of space and want a large screen, look at some of the Showcase cabs. They get you back a few feet from the screen and look awesome.

Well standard classic style cabinets were 24" wide and people regularly played 2 player on them. Not sure why you would need 9 more inches? I would go no more than maybe 28" myself. But this is subjective, but you really don't want to make a cabinet that cant fit through a normal door. Building it to fit one room that has double doors is short term thinking, the kind that can easily later result in the cabinet having to be junked or given away.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

How big are the doors you'll need to get the thing through?  Better measure them first.

If you can't be a good example at least try to be a horrible reminder.

The only reason I was thinking of building it wider is because I'm 6'2" and most of my friends are basketball players like I used to be, so they range from 5'10' all the way up to 6'10". While I figured it was impractical for most, it would probably be the best custom option for us.

I did all the measurements with doorways and I was sure they'd work because I'm about to start building a new house, so the cabinet wouldn't have a problem getting through the doorway.

So maybe I'll give more thought to trimming the sides down a few more inches. Maybe I'll take it down to 28" - 30".
