i just had my first taste of warlords.... and it was damn good
« on: September 04, 2004, 09:07:04 am »
Well i am a little to young to have been around for the atari days (im 19) and i just bought the tv games 2 player paddle games. Me and my friends had a blast playing pong and foosball and the other games but we had a total blast playing the arcade version of warlords that was included as well.

I dont think we have ever had that much fun or laughed that hard while playing a video game. We were instantly tunred into warlord junkies.

Now here is where the problem came in. It was not soon enough that we were craving for 4 player warlords and wish that the company had come out with a 4 player paddle games or a way to link up two systems (will never happen though).

So what is the cheapest way to get some 4 player warlords action. Should i hop on ebay and buy the game/ system with 4 paddle controllers? Is the atari console version the same as the arcade? We just really want to play this game with 4 players as it would be a riot. thanks

I wonder if AnalogMame+ supports 4 spinners (I think it does).  You could then do that and have 4 spinners.  The console version is a lot different graphically than the arcade version.  IMO the console one is faster.  I enjoy playing both actually.  It is one of my favorite games of all time.

The 2600 version is on the same controller.  I think it's a little better than the arcade version because it only has one ball and no dragon.  Allows for a little more strategy when playing against human foes.

Great feeling to juke your friend out, take your shot, get the ball caught behind his shield (because he moved to block your shot a 1/2 second too late and the ball bounced back on him) and watch him lose half of his castle!

My favorite all-time 4-p paddle game is Video Olympics on the 2600.

There are versions of the different games on it (notably volleyball) that allow for ALOT of strategy.
Volleyball has a "spike" option, where you can jump your paddle up alot higher by pushing the button.
Some of the 4-p soccer/foosball/pong type games allow for strategy too because the "front" guy can change the english the "back" guy put on a ball, and alter its course to the goal.

I believe warlords is actually a paddle game and not a spinner game. Paddles have a POT inside while spinners don't.

A set of 4 atari 2600 paddles and a cheapo analog gameport joystick and some rewiring will get you 4 paddles on your PC.

Almost any game that used a padel, will work very well with a spinner.

They are just about the same type of device... with exception that the spinner has no stopping point.

You should also explore many other games that used spinners, paddles, ect.    Much fun : )

Superspint for instance... is truely an awesomely fun game (with a spinner).

 Some other spinner games...

Turbo
Tron
Arkanoid (many versions)
Top Secret
Pole Position
Tempest
Tac Scan
Star Trek
Sea Wolf
Off The Wall (sente) - a tennis like game
Off The Wall              - a breakout type game
Major Havoc
Kick
Mad Planets
Super Off Road
Hot Rod
APB
Blasteroids
Block Block
Cameltry
Discs of Tron
Fire Truck
Free Kick
Two Tigers

Almost all racing games will work well with spinners.  Make sure to get a nice analog pedal set for best playability tho.

how do you guys feel about this auction, think i should go for it? It looks to be in great condition

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62054&item=8128431543&rd=1

Then ill just grab a copy of warlords and some paddles separately in a different auction.

This atari is a later revision of the atari jr model and i think this one came out in 1986. So seems as it would be better to get a later produced model for it will have a better probability of lasting longer. What do you guys think.

I THINK that it is going to go high on the price. The box like doubles the value of stuff like that.

I would personally grab a 7800 instead, they seem cheaper than the 2600s, they are newer than the non-jr models, and have the advantage of having both the 7800 and 2600 game library.

My only hesitation in that auction was the part about "Shipping to be paid by winning bidder, and may include the cost of any special packing materials which are necessary to keep the item safe & secure in transit.".

I get a little nervous about these types of statements in auctions.
The guy has a great feedback rating, but I still get nervous about open ended statements like that.
