Gauntlet/Atari joystick
« on: August 28, 2004, 11:10:50 pm »
Anyone know how to take these apart?  No matter what I've tried I can't get the pin out of the center.   :(

Any tips greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if it's anything at all like the Pac-Man joystick I just disassembled.

My center pole had become "fused" with the metal of the centering grommet (rust).  A few shots of WD-40 and then a few swift taps on the end of the pole with a small hammer and it eventually broke loose.

Like I said though, I'm not sure if yours is similar or not, but I hope this helps.

I believe you need a "pin punch".  (After wd-40, etc)

Try umm.. http://shop.store.yahoo.com/tmt/pinpunchset.html (first link found)

That did the trick on the big one, thanks.  I seems there is a very small one too on the bottom and I managed to break the appropriately sized punch on that one.  It's in there *very* good.

Finally got the joystick apart and built a module for it.  Ready to play some Gauntlet and Rolling Thunder.  Unfortunately it is **very** loose.  I have no idea which part needs to be replaced.  The spring?  Hat thing on top?  Actuator?  I looked at the Gauntlet Operators Manual but it seems the top and bottom halves were the only parts.   :(

Anyone have an idea?
