Rotary Joystick feel?
« on: August 26, 2004, 08:29:55 pm »
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I remember of the rotary joystick games (like Ikari Warrior, Guerilla Wars, etc.), the rotary stick clicked at each increment of a turn and probably had about 49 points around the diameter. Is this correct?

I guess what I'm wondering is, if I take a standard joystick and hookup a mouse hack (somewhere here had cool looking directions to do this) to it to make a rotary joystick, will the feel and operation work well or will it just spin too loosely for these games?

Thanks for the thoughts and opinions.

Well, you could do what I did and buy some Happs optical rotary supers.  It takes some MAME hacking from what I've been reading, but it gets rid of the "click" feel from the LS30s.
Still in the collecting parts and ideas phase of cabinet building.

I believe the clicky rotary sticks have 12 points around the dial. I have a Wico one around here but it is missing a tiny piece of metal that renders it useless.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's 12 clicks.

I can confirm it's just 12 clicks on the Happs rotary.

And I can confirm that its 12 clicks on an LS-30 as well. Just for the record SNK did make optical rotarys for a game called "Caliber 50". From the top the sticks look just like LS-30S except the hex shapped handles were green instead of yellow. Other then that they are totally different sticks but both perform rotary action. The Caliber 50 sticks are optical and have no clicks to them. Of course you can get both types from Happ as well if you don't mind the bat shaped handles.

Here was an auction for the Caliber 50 sticks. Just thought people might want to see what they looked like. :)

Spidermonkey:  when you post a long link, you have to highlight the whole thing and hit the url button on the toolbar- it's the 2nd one in from the left, on the bottom row- looks like a globe with a teapot ;D

Goofy:  Here's the rotary hack you were looking for:
