Easiest way to wire Enter/Pause
« on: August 25, 2004, 09:19:13 pm »
Wiring up the panel again right now and was wondering what is the easiest way to wire up buttons for pause/enter and such.  Should this be done on a wiring level or software, 2 player panel with IPAC 4 encoder....

Thanks

Tim

If you want dedicated admin buttons on your CP, you're going to have to program your I-Pac for them.  The default Mame config uses shifted button combos (P1 Start + another button) for Enter, Esc, Tab, Pause, and a few others.

You'll have to hook them up to some unused slot (of which you'll have plenty since you're only building a 2P panel) and program that slot with either the GUI programming tool or the simple notepad based one.

I like having dedicated buttons for Enter, Esc, & Pause.  Makes it simpler for anyone else using the cab.  I don't want anyone messing around with the in-game settings, so Tab is still hidden though.

If you can't be a good example at least try to be a horrible reminder.

Ok, I have the WinIpac program running and see how to assign the standard buttons and even see the ADMIN buttons up top, but don't see how to get them recognizing as Enter and such....I have the the BYOAC book layout btw.

Enter is 3SW3, BTW, so it's only P you have to configure.

If you want an easy solution (for MAME), wire your Pause button to say, 4SW3 (default H).  Now in MAME, either edit your ctlr.ini file or start a game and go to TAB - INPUTS ALL GAMES and change UI PAUSE to "H" or "H or P".  Problem solved.

If you want to program 4SW3 to send "P" instead of "H", then:

Is the I-PAC/4 newer than January 2004?  Are you using the WinIPAC IPD?

See http://www.ultimarc.com/winipac_ipd.html

First plug a keyboard into the I-PAC pass-thru, or connect a USB keyboard to the computer.

Start the software, and under OPTIONS - select I-PAC/4

METHOD 1:

Click "Go to Set Keycodes Mode" (might come up by default).  Check "Table View".
Click underneath the Green (not the blue) 4SW3 entry.  Press the Enter key.  Click Program.  Optionally, click "Save Config" to save the file.

METHOD 2:

Click "Go to Panel Design Mode", drag a button over, click 4SW3 on the left, Click "Go to Set Keycodes Mode", click on the button.  Press the Enter key. Click Program.  Optionally, click "Save Config" to save the file.
