If only Mame would....................
« on: August 25, 2004, 01:23:50 pm »
If only Mame would allow you to delete a rom from a front end ala Itunes. That way you could see the screen shot to decide whether or not you wanted to keep a game. It would be alot quicker than going through rom names, starting the game, exiting the game, finding the games rom name, and deleteing.

Is anyone working on anything like this?

Kindof a contradiction there: MAME itself wouldn't do this, but you mention frontend...

It would be possible for a FE to do this, but I doubt you will get any FE dev's to add the feature...because we don't want hassle from people blaming us for the deletion of roms!

And as for your comment: 'you could see the screen shot to decide whether or not you wanted to keep a game'...how can you tell if you want the game from the screenshot?  OK so maybe for some games, but you shouldn't judge a book by its cover ;)

Edit: to achieve what you want, you could just use a FE which has the ability to add/remove games from lists.  So rather than deleting roms, you are just modifying the games list(s).

Plus, many FE's have filters.  So you dont have to search through all the games.

... Not get slower on each progressive version
... Not require you to pick the best one for your application (Mame32, Mame32Plus, DosMame, AdvanceMame..)
... Not constantly change existing rom names, dumps on each version
... Not skip full regression testing on each release (e.g. the really broken .85)
... Not get so huge for 1 file. It should library load what's needed for anything that is massive in size.

plain MAME pretty much sucks these days, you gotta use some kind of special version like nonameMAME or an optimized version for your processor. or you can just use Kawaks

not to mention their game releasers are whackjobs, they think theyre like godly. if u go on their forum and ask about why the 2001 games never came out when they should have according to their self imposed 3 year rule (which is now almost 4 years), they will bite your head off. i find it hillarious that hackers make a sort of honor code for themselves, when still they are pirates. people will try and debate this but they know the people theyre releasing it for dont have the boards, so theyre not legal. its really funny when you think about it. seriously they should just go to 0-day roms who cares when they came out, you ever hear of PC game warez, PC games still make tons of money even though i can DL doom 3 the week before it came out...

sorry offtopic rant..

Not to sidetrack the discussion, but the previous post already did... The 3 year rule is NOT the only rule.  3 other things are dependent on it.  Here is the list:

1-Older than 3 years
2- NO LONGER MAKING MONEY FOR THE COMPANY (i.e. no longer commercially viable)
3-Roms have been dumped and decrypted or even available
4-Emulation is written

A blanket statement about 2001 games not being in is not just due to #1 above.

www.mameworld.net/emuloader - right-click on game name, select delete file (or press the Delete key) and confirm.

actually i wouldnt mind being able to delete roms from the front end either. i dont think security is an issue. it would be easy to have a double-check thingo ('are you sure you want to delete?' that kind of thing)

... be free for distribution
... allow you to play thousands of games
... constantly update thier game list where possible
... have open code
... have developers who selflessly give of their time with no reward

Fractal is right on.

On the piracy point I could care less about taking 1 day old games, but I am also aware that doing that could seriously damage arcade game developement.  If all the money is gone, there will be no new games.
