These are great. There were so many cool games that I used to play as a kid that I just can't remember. I see these lists and have an "oh yeah! moment".

I would also recommend going to http://www.mameworld.com/maws and clicking on the Hall of Fame link. This will give you games in order of their rank by users votes. I found it pretty interesting.

What would be really cool is if MAME implemented a voting feature that would shoot votes through the internet and tally them on a server to be downloaded by MAME. Then, be able to list games in their ranked order. Or something to that effect.

But, until then, let's continue these lists of everyone's all-time favorite games.

As for mine, I would add the following great games:

Hyper Sports
Track and Field
Sinistar
Metal Slug (all)
Cyberball 2072
Karate Champ
Tron
Gauntlet

These may not be the greatest of all-time, but I will continue to play them heavily.

Missing a couple of my all time favourites there: Salamander and Green Beret. These are possibly the root of my desire to own a cab.

Arkanoid and Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move

I just love the level start music of Arkanoid, and the Puzzle Bobble music should have a warning label about its addictiveness.

Man, what a question. What is your definiation of "classic"? Famously popular? Or just Old and Fun?

Some of my personal favorites (some old, some not, some popular, some not):

Juno First
Rolling Thunder
Assault
Shinobi
Bubble Bobble
Punch Out
Magical Drop
Hard Drivin'
Nibbler
Joust

And some notables that were not my all time faves:

Bump n Jump
Zaxxon
Congo Bongo
Burgertime
Cameltry

There is a folder in MAME32 that is called Golden Age...I cue that up when we have dinner parties and people go CRAZY..."You have EVERY game I loved when I was a kid!!!"  Yeah...don't even make me fire up the 2600 or NES emulator.

Obviously this topic has a lot of subjectivity, but it's great fun anyway.

I'd think of classics as . . . if you could only have XX number of games (25, 50, 100, whatever) in your MAME cabinet, what would they be?

Then, there's the list of wow that's a fun game to play, or I've never played that before, I just discovered it and it was cool style of games.

Anyway, there's so many great games . . . that's what makes designing a control panel so difficult.

I can't believe Robotron didn't make the first three lists on this post!

A couple of questions:

1) How do you create your own lists of games in MAME32, so I can create my own 'Golden Age'?
2) Would it be worthwhile/demanded/interesting if people could upload there MAME32 lists here for others to download?

Just a thought.

Dig-dug is awesome - and one I have fond memories playing in the arcade, but I've recently become a big Mr. Do fan.  Similar game play, but more interesting.

What about PolyPlay? Hell, it'd be fun to make a replica PolyPlay machine... don't know if I'd really want to use it afterwards, though ;)

My list of classic favorites changes now with Mame.

I never played robotron until recently.  We have so much fun, it's never the same game twice.  I used to play asteroids mostly in the early 80's, but now I play time pilot, 1943, and Arkanoid all the time.

I go from Galaga to Burgertime,  Arkanoid to Joust, Joust reminds me of Robotron.  I then jump to Centipede and Then the old Golden tee golf.  After that I blast things in Timepilot, and my friends love to play Arkanoid right now.

There is a list of the "best" video games by year on Klov.  The top 100 list.

I love mame, it lets me play the games I didn't have the quarters for years ago.
