Who enjoys BYOAC instead of BYOAC?
« on: August 23, 2004, 03:37:25 pm »
;D  I was just thinking... I kind of spend more time on this board typing about BYOAC rather than heading into the basement and actually BMOAC...

Who here feels the same? You kinda like chatting/posting about this hobby a little more than actually DOING it??  :D

Well, I'm pretty new to the forums, but reading these forums won't wake up the baby as easy as a circular saw does.  :)

Plus, I can tell my wife I am paying bills online or something.  j/k

All the reading makes me feel like I'm getting something done on my cab, even though I'm not. ;)  I'm running 3 cabs with PCBs right now, but one of these days, I'm going to stop buying parts, finalize my plans and build the MAME machine that will make them obsolete, I swear.

I actually enjoy working on my cab more than the forums; but my wife enjoys storing her JUNK in my garage/workshop even more than that, so I'm kinda stuck here at the moment.

Some of us are at the "discrete sounds" part of our cabinets.  You know, we've got it put together and running (like the MAME team adding a new game to the emulator) but all of the little things that really need to be done to make the cab 100% perfect (like writing discrete sound simulation code for said new game) just keep getting postponed.

In other words, I should be working on my cabs, but my enthusiasm for working on the minutia is lacking.  Instead I'm too busy reading posts in here!

so far, i have been in the planning stage this summer while slowly gathering materials.  i am glad to be able to help others out with questions after reading and researching for my cab.  and every once in a while i will come across an interesting idea..
i just hope i dont give away too much to ruin the surprise and have a nice assembly of these concepts when i finally unveil my machine..

I really like learning about everything while I build my cab.  I gave myself a year to finish it, and it's coming on about 9 months.  During that whole time, I have been reading and reading... hopefully it will be everything I want in a cab!

I enjoy watching people less fortunate than myself (i.e. friends) come over and drool all over my cab.  I think I enjoy watching them play it more than playing it myself.  Kinda reminds me when my Mom sucked and wouldn't let me play games, so I would sneak into the arcade at the mall or Sears and just relish the sights, sounds, and s#!t-talkin'.

Ahhhhhhhhhh......YOUTH! 8)

Also, when I have a day off and I'm just loungin' in the house doing whatever, I like to leave my favorite games in attract mode, just so I can hear it.  I doesn't matter if I'm watching TV, taking a nap, entertaining the girlfriend, posting here....whatever....shoot, I can hear Strider Hiryu swingin' his sword right now!

Ahem...does anyone else do this?

In one month, it will be the 1 year anniversary marking the day I bought my upright cabinet to get converted to MAME. Right now the status is: All parts bought & cabinet patched with putty.  ;D

Then, to make matters worse, what do I do? I offer these crazy joysticks with fire buttons on top, so now my free time is spent filling in orders!

I started into this hobby about 10 months ago and have managed to start way more projects than I can possibly complete at the same time with the ongoing distractions of being able to play all the cabs and also check the board for ideas from people far more creative than myself and also the not so inspiring few...

Currently I have cabs in the following condition:

Mame upright cab : just need to finish the CP. (CP is functional and that is slowing me down) and figure out ART.

Point Blank 2: 95% refinished and cleaned / rewired. Purchased it non functional. Guns work, so this slows me down.

Cocktail cab custom built: Completed, however built it too tall, it's more like a stand up mini cab than a cocktail. Works side by side fighter controls. Need to add TB, spinner, and 4 way CP or two CPs and use vertical for TB, spinner games.

65 Seeburg jukebox - still some cleanup to do, but functional.

Custom built cocktail cab (midway style). Only needs a little more work on the art and possibly a 3rd CP and of course the front end hasnt been chosen yet.

Problem is, that I have been at the stages listed above for the last 2 months or more as I spend more time playing with the unfinished cabs or hanging here.

Hopefully will finish at least one of them.
