The 7th button....What is it used for?
« on: August 22, 2004, 01:49:56 pm »
What is the 7th button used for. I keep seeing people say its for neo-geo games. Is that all it would be used for. What does it do in neo-geo games? Ive also seen people say they just hook the 7th button up to another button. So two buttons are wired into 1 spot on the ipac. What purpose does this serve? Could some one shed a little more light on this subject, before I drill my CP for a 7th button? Thanks.

One more question also. Since I will be drilling my holes for my buttons today. I'am also drilling for my Joysticks. I have Happs Super Joysticks. What size of hole do I drill for these? Are they also 1 1/8" holes?

neogeo games only use 4 buttons.  the reason people put a button down there is because it places the 4th button in a location that closer resembles the neogeo layout.  if you are not very familiar with neogeo games and you dont really care about the layout then you dont really need an extra button down there..

Ok, then I think I will pass on the 7th button for now.

But what about my other question? Im heading to Lowes right now, and need to know if I need a different size hole saw.  ;D

You might like neogeo games though :)  Many are very good.  Like the Metal Slug series.  But those only need 3 buttons anyway.

Ive played some Neo-geo games, and I do like them. But if its only because it places a certain button closer to what a neo-geo arcade is like, then I dont think I need it.

Since this is my first cab, I think Ill be keeping it a simple 6 button layout for now. Thanks for the info guys.

I have a 6 button layout too.  not into the neogeo fighters too much.  The only game that I play that uses all 4 buttons is 2020 baseball.  And then the 4th button is timeout :)  For neogeo in my ctrlr files I have my buttons setup like
XX4
123

well if youre into the neo geo fighters its a lot easier playing with the buttons laid out the way theyre supposed to be then having to use the top and bottom row on a game that isnt meant to. but like what has been said, if youre not into neo geo games u prolly dont need it but then what if u start liking them? hehe

I dunno but I think it's a lot more comfortable with the 7 button layout. This is going to be my first cab also but i'm going with the neogeo SF combo. Hey if you got the extra button, just wire it up.

So, if you put the 7th button down low, do you wire it into one of the other buttons or do you have 7 distinct buttons?

That is, what would the buttons look like?

    456
    123
  7

Like that or what?
Thanks.

thats not the way most people do it.
from what i understand it usually is:

 123
 456
1

you can do some searches and find plenty who have asked about this before..  i, however, will also be going with a 6 button layout

you dont want two, four buttons.

with the 7 button config you would have to go into the neogeo games and config them to use the "7th" button

Actualloy people do it differently.  Some do it like that.  It depends on if the button is on the top row or bottom row.  Many wire it like this:
  456
4123

Either way you do it it is easy to set mame up using the ctrlr files to have everything mapped the way you want.

i stand corrected..
i mainly wanted to emphasize the fact that most place the 7th button diagonally below the lower row.  i am planning on using a 6 button layout while still being able to enjoy neogeo games.  it looks good on paper so far, but i will have to play test it..

Mine:

1234
456

with a slight curve.

If you can't be a good example at least try to be a horrible reminder.

Here's how the hotrod joystick is laid out:

http://www.hanaho.com/products/HotRodJoystick/gallery.html

Scroll half-way down the page.

This is not exactly the standard mame layout, but I believe most mame versions support the hotrod.

This is basically the way I'm laying my panel out - but add button-tops for the 8-way joysticks, add a 4-way, a spinner, and a trackball, oh and I have an administrative "shift."

I guess I was attacked by the CP creep.

I always play:

jamma:
123

neo:
123 (4)

capcom/fighter:

123
456

Neo & fighter combo: BEST LAYOUT
123(4)
456

on a 6 button layout double the neo's 4'th button with the #6  button

123
456 <- (neo # 4)

As a frequent street fighter and Neo player... the 7 button layout witht the neo #4 on the top row is the only way to go. I can almost stand playing the traditional 6 button with the neo using the #6 button.

The 7 button with a slight curve is even better.

That all jamma though: Don't know how to set that that up in mame ?

Is there any easy way in MAME to set up a bunch of games with one profile and a group of games with a different profile (without having to do games 1 at a time)?

I like the 7 button layout for use with Defender and Stargate much better than trying to use a 6 button layout - especially if the 7th button is in reach of the your joystick hand.

mine is setup:

456
123
      4

i find it easier coz most games i play use 123 - i thought it would be easier on the wrists with 123 at the front.

i do play streetfighter - but as i hadnt played it for so long it doesnt bother me the punches and kicks are the wrong way round.
oh dear - not rain again......Scottish weather is crap, oh well - at least Mame can keep me company.

Man, recently i've been thinking the same thing, creating profiles for groups of games!!, ANY IDEAS, cuz it would really suck have to map all them keys for all neogeo games :S

It's possible.   You can set up controls for all NeoGeo games, for example.  I know there's ways to do it for various groups.   I don't actually know how, since I've never bothered to do it, but some more helpful soul will soon explain how hopefully.  :)

If you can't be a good example at least try to be a horrible reminder.

There's already a topic talking about it, I think in the software group.  Try a search and see what comes up.  I'll do one too and if I find it first I'll link it.
