I am pretty new to all of this, but I recently put mine together (mostly anyway) and I had that same problem.

By default the jumpers are not set to USB. This pic actually is the correct way to set up USB:

In other words, the left jumper is at the very top, the right jumper is at the bottom.

Hope that helps..

Could have left this in your other Mini-PAC thread, doesn't matter.

Anyway, remember all the MKI boards are the same.  There are only 2 jumper settings:
USB/PS2
ALT/MAME (or is it ALT/ROM)

For you, use USB.  Ther is no point even trying PS2 unless you plug it into the PS2 keyboard port on your motherboard which you'll need a PS2 to PS2 cable for (is the cable it came with PS2 to USB or PS2 to PS2 with a USB adapter on the end).  Rmember in USB mode you can not connect a PS2 keyboard using the passthrough connector, you will have to use either another USB keyboard or have your PS2 keyboard plugged into the motherboard itself.

Does the PC detect it at all?  Is there anything in control panel under USB devices?

Nah, not stupidity.  Just an assumption that if you bought a USB version the jumper would already be set that way is all! ;)

It's an error. Andy usually does set the jumpers according to which connection you order ( I'm pretty sure ).

Quick question.  I have ordered only the mini pac board - to save $$$$.  However, I want to run it in USB mode to use a trackball.  I assume that all I need to do is to connect a male to male USB cable to a USB female to PS/2 male converter.  Then, use the USB male in on the computer and the PS/2 Male on the PC input on the mini pac board.  I know that I need to change the jumper as well, but I am worried about the PS/2 to USB converter and whether that is correct for this board.  Thanks a bunch.

others have mentioned that the straight-thru ps/2(male) to usb (type a female) like the ones commonly used with logitech mice work fine.

Worked great - thanks - mine is actually a PS/2 to USB from a microsoft USB mouse.  When I plugged in just the cable, the computer told me that an unknown device was plugged in, but detected and works fine with mini pac plugged on.

HELP - I posted earlier that the USB option worked.  It did, but only in some computers and some USB ports.   It works well on my laptop when I use the USB ports on my docking bay.  However, when I try to use it in the USB ports on the laptop itself, it does not even detect it.  I have tried both ports many times.  One time, XP reported that the USB device that I plugged in malfunctioned.  I have also tried it in my home computer that regularly has USB devices plugged in.  I even unplugged all USB devices because I thought that it might be a power issue.  Speaking of power, do you think that the USB port is unpowered on my computers?  I bought a new motherboard specifically for the MAME I am building, but the power supply that I was going to use is not the right type, so I have been unable to test the minipac on its future motherboard mate.  I have purchased another power supply as well as a USB externally power hub in order to test with the new motherboard as well as a powered hub.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Well, here I am to post another message about the MINIPAC.  I have finally found out what works.  Instead of running the cable to the computer direct, I have purchased another USB hub (2.0) and I run the cable to the hub then the hub to the computer.  For some reason, the hub makes everything work right.  The hub is not externally powered (although it has the option because I thought that was the problem).  Anyway, I hate when people leave me hanging, so if anyone ever has this problem, you might want to try a hub.
