SVGA Monitor / 21".....mount sideways??
« on: August 13, 2004, 09:22:09 am »
Being a newbie, I have an odd question I thought of last night.  I am putting a 21" SVGA monitor into an old Sky Shark cabinet for MAME.  Is it possible to lay the monitor on it's side, and somehow rotate the screen output 90 degrees???  (Most the classic games I want to play are layed out vertically, and my monitor is larger in the horizontal dimension.)

In the settings of MAME there is a function to rotate the screen which would serve your purpose.

Are there any drawbacks or negatives if I do this??  Any games effected??  Are there some games that ARE layed out horizontally that would create a problem??

I'm assuming that if I installed in normally (horz.), a game like Pac Man would have black "dead areas" on each side of the output...correct?

I only want to build the mounting platform once!!!   ;D

The majority of the newer games are layed out horzintally, a bunch of classics are layed out horiztonally. If you mount the monitor for a vert orientation any horizontal games would have dead black areas on the top/botom.

There is nothing wrong with mounting a monitor vertically. If the vertical games are the ones you want to play, it's the better solution.

There are people who constructed rotateing monitor systems so they could rotate the monitor from vert/horiz depending on the game.

Ya actually there is, you can't tip a SVGA Montior on its side, go ahead try, the electron gun is not meant to be on its side so your colors will go crazy and your screen will warp....

btw, do you own the monitor yet?

I would go 19 true arcade (200 shipped) + arcadeVGA any day of the week.  Or a SVid TV + built by ati videocard over a SVGA any day of the week.

But to answer your question.   No... but expect that you will have to degause it.  Turning the rotation, messes with the world magnetics... and it actually makes a difference!  Turn it off, rotate, get it working on a desk before mounting... make sure you like it... mount away.

You need to degauss the screen after any change in orientation.
That will clear it back up.

The only other warning I would give is that most PC monitors are not set to VENT/COOL when tipped on their side.
If I were mounting the monitor vertically, I'd do so without the case.

Lilwolf,

I appreciate the input.  What are you reasons for choosing a....

"19 true arcade (200 shipped) + arcadeVGA any day of the week.  Or a SVid TV + built by ati videocard over a SVGA any day of the week" ???

Please help me understand the pros and cons.

If you plan to play any vector games, I'd go with a PC monitor.

I'd go with a PC monitor anyway because you can dumb down the picture on a PC monitor if matching an arcade monitor is your goal.

You can't smarten up a lower-res arcade monitor to play vector games as clearly as a PC monitor though.

Asteroids, Tempest, Star Wars, Star Castle, Star Trek, The Empire Strikes Back, etc...

The ones that are drawn out of lines, instead of filled in shapes.
