perfect 360 joys on x_arcade
« on: August 25, 2002, 01:01:31 pm »
I just recently bought an X-arcade joystick from x gaming and I was pleased with what I recieved. I enjoyed playing mame games on my pc but then I encountered a snag. When it came down to fighting games the "x-sticks" as they're called, I felt, just didn't do the job. The diagonals were hard to find at times. I tried to adjust the microswitches but the I just couldn't get it right. So I did the next logical thing to correct this control mess, I went to my friend who works at a local arcade and had him sell me a couple of spare perfect 360 joys from happ. The problem I'm having now is how to connect them exactly. Any helpwould be appreciated as I am eger to get this mofo rollin'.

any 5 volt adaptor..go to radio shack and get an adaptor and cut the wires.there is one ground and one regular.its usually 1 white coded wire and 1 black.so try to see which is ground.usually its the white one.

good luck and let us know how things turn out. :)

yeah I went ahead and bought a 5v DC adaptor. Thing is I just don't know where to connect the rest of the wires. I connected the 5v to the joys but I dont know what to do with the others  :-\

what you mean OTHERS ???...you only need 5 volts for the joysticks..thats all..others such as left,right,up,down...work when the 5 volts is there.read examples page to find out about wiring.

"Others," well, let me be more specific.
As we all know perfect 360z have 6 connectors
u,d,l,r,5v+, and ground.
What I went ahead and did was connect the 5v to the 5v on the joy. I connected the each of the directional connectors to their respective locations. I guess my question is where do I connect the ground and what do I do with that daisy chained ring of connectors that used to connect to the 4 microswitches?

If I understand correctly the X-arcade connects to the PC's keyboard port. You shouldn't need to use a separate 5 volt adaptor, you can use +5V and ground from the keyboard connector.

Have a look at http://www.hardwarebook.net/connector/userinput/keyboardpc6.html for details of which pins to use.

Grasshoppper has a great point.  You should use a multimeter and look for +5V already in the X-Arcade circuit (probably powered from the keyboard port).  If you use an external power adapter and connect the ground wire to the rest of the X-Arcade grounds, there is a chance you could blow the keyboard fuse.

A good Idea but there is a problem with it. I should probably let it be known that it is a bad not only a bad idea but one I wouldn't want to try.. again that is. See the thing is I already tried to draw 5v from the pcb. but the 5v only exists when the x is connected to a pc via ps/2 port. I didn't find the 5v when the x was connected to the DC or PS2.(oh and snaake the "and the game pads ground" you meant the daisy chained sucker that links to all four directions originaly right?) just askin again to make sure. :)

Just thought I'd point out that whenever I read your posts, I think you are either the laziest typer ever, or a Russian Exchange student who types like he talks (in broken english).  I seem to prefer the latter and imagine you being some large Russian dude from the Ukraine. :)

Well heres what I have done so far I ended up using another power supply(5v DC adaptor). I wired the 360 directions and wired the 5v to the 5v on the DC adaptor and the ground from the ground on the joy to the ground on the adaptor also. but still I get no response :'(

SH*T!  Its appears that this thing is a no go.  >:( I called up happ and spoke to one of their techies and he basically had me probe around with a multimeter and we eventually came up with the conclusion that it is simply not possible Why? because the "daisy chain" that originally wrapped around the four directions is not a ground like it usually but it is in fact the 5v! This whole mofo is in reverse. Damn, well at least I tried. Guess its copetition joy time for me. Thanks for all your help gentlemen. :)

The X arcade may use some kind of matrix.  I've noticed some USB gamepads that do that.  You cant chain the grounds because there is no ground :)  But as far as the inputs, they should read 5v because they are active low.  That is, they are activated by pulling them to ground.  You could still use the 360s by using some TTL inverters or something.  Been a while since I did any digital stuff, plus I'd have the see the circuit but I still think it could be done....

Another thing, the x-arcade is actively high and is pulled low when a microswitch is hit.
