Slot cutter bit - Canada
« on: August 03, 2004, 11:34:11 am »
Hi folks,

Well, after hearing about it a few times, I've come to the realization that yes, it's true. Finding a 1/16" slot cutter bit in Canada is virtually impossible. I've tried everywhere local and websites, nada. nothing. zip.

So, in light of that I decided to suck it up and order one from http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/bt_slot.html.  I figured that for a $16 part, the brokerage and shipping couldn't be that bad at all, right? Wrong.

Before I submitted the order, I calculated the costs, and considering that They won't ship anything less than UPS to Canada, I'm looking at $14 shipping + $30 brokerage fee (UPS minimal brokerage I believe) + $16 in the end.  Which is... well... rediculous. :)

So that's where I'm wondering if someone could help me out.  They ship free to the US (although if a Canadian VISA holder pays and ships to a US address, I STILL pay extra).  My request is if someone from the US who has a paypal account could send me a PM, and we can organize to have the part shipped to you, and then you could send it via regular mail to me.  I'll pay whatever the cost up-front, and it'll save me a bundle on UPS brokerage and shipping.

I knew coming in to this that it wouldn't be cheap, but I personally don't feel UPS should be getting over double the value of the item purchased, that's just evil. :)

PS. If anyone does know of a Canadian source for these bits, feel free to let me know. :)  That'd definately be my preferred route.

Seriously I thought I was screwed when I was looking for one as well.  I checked all the places I figured carried router bits. (Canadian tire, Home depot, Sears, house of tools, many many home builder stores, co-op home center) the best I could find was a 1/8" slot cutter. I was doomed!  Then someone mentioned a little tool sharpening shop and lo and behold they had them!  So my advice is check the tool shapening shops (i.e. they sharpen saw blades, lawnmower blades, chain saws, router bits, etc. etc.)

Hope this helps, and good luck on your quest :-)

That sucks... I did a group buy a few weeks ago and ordered them to the states and went and picked them up.

Anyways, I know of a place in Toronto.  $32 plus tax.  Let me know if you need the name, and I'll dig it up.

Is that $32 for just the bit, or for the assembly with arbor and bearing?  If it's the whole kit and caboodle, I'd definately order from Toronto...  Basically I'm looking for something just like #5341 on the site posted above.

Yea, I think it's the whole thing.  When I went in, he estimated it to be $32.  I would give them a call and ask.

As for the name, I forget.  it's 'something' Machinery (like Allied Machinery, or something).  I would call Makita and find out who their authorized parts dealer is downtown (it's on Queen St).  That's how I found them.

I don't mean to go off topic but there seems to be a good number of Canadians here, why don't we start a new thread/topic. One that would list all Canadian suppliers/distributers of arcade parts, building materials, hardware, etc. in Canada. I paid about $670 to build my CP and almost $100 was shipping and duty fees.

I'm not knocking suppliers outside Canada, most are fantastic, but the Canadian dollar, duty and shipping is killing us here. Not only that but alot of posters here are wondering where do you get slot cutters, cheap tools, hardware, etc. I think if we could build a little database/thread with all the suppliers, distributers and manufacturers here it could save us and newbies alot of time searching for info. I know that we will still have to use outside suppliers for some things, but if we could find it in Canada then we could save a dollar or two.

Any thoughts on this, good idea or bad?

Hi there,

I had no problem at all getting the 1/16" slot cutter. KMS tools in Coquitlam, BC (www.kmstools.com) had 3 in stock, just drove over and picked it up. Windsor Plywood stores in BC will order any Freud router bit or cutter, no special charges.

The Freud part number is 56-100.
CMT part number is 822.316.11

CMT products are available from Island Saw & Tool www.islandsaw.com or Euro-tech Services BC 604-590-1478.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have problems located other items.

I think photorock is on to something here. I try and help out the guys I know by picking stuff up when I'm in Toronto, since I go to Starburst Coin on a pretty regular basis (now that I know where it is). I'm in the GTA a couple times a week on business and can usually stop to pick up stuff. Having a list of Canadian supplies for common hard-to-find stuff is a fantastic idea.

Stuff isn't that hard to find in Canada...

I was able to get 98% of the materials and tools to build my cab locally in Hamilton.  I got my Slot Cutter from a Contractor Hardware store on Barton St.   And the rest of the tools & drill bits from my local Home Depot.  I got my joysticks, trackballs, trim, & buttons from Starburst in Toronto.  And I got my wire & female quick connects from Chadwicks on Nebo.

The only thing I couldn't get locally was the IPAC, Opti-pac & T-Slick Plus joysticks.
