R/C car radio transmiter to Arcade console?
« on: July 28, 2004, 08:32:48 pm »
???Hi I would like to either build or convert a radio controlled car hand held transmiter for R/C cars into a stationary arcade style console(steering wheel with foward & reverse throttle control). This would be for a R/C car track to add more realism when driving the r/c cars. Any help, advice, and/or just where to get advice would be greatly appreciated.

Such controllers exist, I saw several the other day at a nearby theme park.   As far as building one, I'd look for a transmitter with a secondary controller input jack.  They're usually used to in RC aircraft transmitters to allow an experienced pilot to teach a newbie how to fly. If your car transmitter has such a port, you'd be able to quickly unplug the wheel setup and use the controller normally.

As far as building one, you'd mostly need to figure out what the transmitter is expecting for control signals. Assuming it's an analog input, you'd only need to match the pot values  for the steering and gas/brakes. You could concievably split the gas and brake the same way as is done with PC controllers.

That seems to make sense. My next question would be what type of arcade steering wheel. Happ controls has 50-2838-00  270

Depends on what the transmitter uses for controls. I'd assume they use pots, but short of taking one apart there's no real way to say. The transmitters at the park used a hi/low shifter for forward and reverse, and a single pedal for throttle, but I'd suggest two seperate pedals and no shifter instead.
