WTB: Griffin Powermate
« on: July 23, 2004, 04:38:05 pm »
i really need a volume control on my cab, and yes ive read oscars thing about 3000 times but i still cant understand it.  i dont have an amp like he is talking about, and im afraid of cutting wires on my creative labs speakers for fear of screwing up the wiring and then i would have any speakers at all!  so after all that, i guess im just going to have to bear down and buy one of those powermate things.  i saw that Gozur had one about a month ago, but i missed that sale of course, so i was just wondering if anyone else has one they would want to sell me?  post here or pm me.

 Hulkster,

It's not exactly what you are after, but it certainly wouldn't mess up the look of your showcase cab. I have an ATI remote wonder that could be used. Plug in the reciever into a usb port and then it would function as a mouse, volume control, on/off, etc.. You could program the extra buttons however. Let me know if you are interested. I have one that is laying arround the shop that is essentially brand new.

Here'sa pic of what it looks like.

It operates on radio, so no line of sight needed.

Let me know if interested.

Could always buy one of the Creative Labs inspire kits with the wired remote knob. Kits from the 2.1 on up have these remote knobs.

Can post pix if you need an idea of what they look like.

actually, that is exactly what i have on my cab right now.  i have that wired remote, the only problem is there are so many games that have volume issues, i have to keep using it.  and i know you are thinking, well youll have to do that with your new volume knob too....yeah i guess so, but it will be easier to turn.  and i still havent figured out how to get all the games in mame to have the same volume.  some are set to be louder than others!!! what do i do??

I also wanted a volume knob on my cabinet.

What I did, was use an old amplifier to amplify the computer sound output to some big speakers.  I mounted the amplified close to the outside of the cab, and then made the shaft of the volume knob a lot longer, so it could stick out of the cabinet.  I then put a new knob on the extended shaft.

Works well and looks great IMO.  I don't have any pics of it on my site yet though.  I don't know if that's a viable solution for you or not.

Maybe I'm missing something (most likely  ;D ) but why couldn't you just hack something like this inline volume control:

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=42-2559

Get Oscar's Volume Control solution and re-wire it to this baby.

That way you're not hacking your speaker wires and you're able to control the volume.

Not the greatest solution, but it could very well work.
