Another freebie, ideas anyone?
« on: July 21, 2004, 06:50:40 pm »
Ok, just got back from picking up this one, a buddy found it in an alley, he took what he wanted (marquee, monitor, bezel, and rotary sticks) and gave me the rest.

Note, it had no wiring or boards in it when it was found, so it is basically an empty cabinet. Does have coin door (not shown), speaker grill, power sled, and a few other goodies.

The guy snagged the controls off the panel, but left the panel, which is not a converted Millipede panel, but appears to be a new one (no old holes, has a 90 degree angle in a spot millipede has a curve).

The original Millipede art is still under the black paint.

Yup definitely a Millipede. I would have rather found a Centipede, as Millipede boardsets have become scarce and pricey since the Multipede kit came out.

Wow, those are some pretty big speakers right in your face.  It must be nice to have the arcade underworld network scoping out alleys for ya.  ;D

You could do this:

http://sparhawk.sbc.edu/mame

Or maybe not.  ;)

I didn't have much choice in the matter really. The guy wanted to keep the Time Soldiers marquee and bezel and the rotary sticks, and there was no PCB or wiring.

That's PERFECT!
Quote from his site,

"I did NOT, however, want to harm the original cabinet. I realized fairly
quickly, though, that all of my MAME-based prosthetics for the machine
could be designed to mate with the original machine without so much
as drilling a hole in it."

he didn't alter the cab permanently at all..(unlike that dork who lopped
off the CP outcropping on that dig dug last year..man, I coulda' lopped off
 something of his...)
Pull a year and a half strike- it's over 4eva..
besides, WHL rocks!

I still say mame a snk rotatary mame machine.

Did he want the marquee and bezel for another project?  or to sell?  Ask for the marquee and make some high quality scans.  And for now, see about some low quality color prints for the marquee.  I don't know about the bezel, but might not be a bad way to go initially.

then get a few joysticks.  They are up on ebay all the time.

Then use analog+ mame or noname mame and hook them each up.  This is the hard part... you will need 12+4 connections per joystick, not including the buttons.  But go this way... it plays SO much better.

Then you will have timesoldiers and about 1/2 of the other rotary games.  What you will miss thought is the ikari series (I know real pain) but analog+ mame has a bug in the ikari games that looses the direction after spinning it... One out of order I believe.  I keep meaning to take a look at it...

And if you get it working well.. .hopefully your friend will come back and give you the original marquee and bezel seeing what a cool, specialized mame cab you have :)

Not going the rotary route, at least not with this one. I started stripping the black paint today, will post pictures soon.

Have they ever fixed that glitch with Ikari Warriors? I am trying to figure out the best configuration for the rotary joysticks I wanted to install.

I have not had a chance to fix it.  I'm not sure when / if I will.  I'm in the process of moving to a new house.  Then I am planning on ripping my arcade machine apart for some cosmetic fixes... Then I'm also pretty close to a new frontend release... but I keep adding features...  I really need to wait until I have my cabinet back up (since you find your own annoyances when they are off your development machine and on a cab).

I'm still hoping that the people who made the changes initially could look at it... Since they will probably know where to start...

That one. Since I was building the rotary controls mostly for Ikari I'm not so sure if I want to do it this way rather than the druin way.
