New ThornCab Plans
« on: August 18, 2002, 11:01:18 pm »
I've been admiring the Virtua Tennis cab at the local arcade lately and I decided to take in the tape measure and size 'er up. Here's a photo of the rig

I wanted to make some plans for a wooden version of this all metal cabinet. After puting together the 1st draft, I decided to simplify the design by having 1 piece side panels. Here's what I came up with:

What do you think?  Anyone out there about to build a cabinet?

Wow, nice job on the plans! I've already got a cab but it's a really neat design regardless. Good luck!

It looks as if the monitor is going to be sticking out of the back. Is there enough room for it to be enclosed?

Well I took measurements right from the Sega cab so it should be OK. I guess it would be good to check first since it is a newer design.

I might just steal these plans and use them (or maybe slightly modify them)...Thanks for the kind post :) Very cool cab indeed!

I like these cabs because the monitor sits in a slanted metal frame.  Your diagram shows an enclosed back (a little different than the original). But still very cool.  I wonder if anyone with welding equipment would venture a try at a metal frame.

btw, you might have an issue with how deep the monitor sits.

I also have a cab with the monitor at an angle... I like it... but one thing... I want to watch DVDs on it, and you can't see it across the room.... Not a big deal... If I built a cabinet, I would try to get it more multi purpose and probably get a tv-in/out video card

But I really like the overall look!  It also looks like it might take a less space then mine.

I could also see it being a good set of plans for each change for a 4 player cabinet

I know it looks like there isn't enough room but there is. Take a look at this side view of the cab.

The bottom of the "monitor box" measures 18 inches long and the vertical beam is 4.5 inches thick so that's about 22 inches. Each square on the paper is equal to 2 inches. Eleven blocks = 22 inches.  Must be one of those optical illusion things.

The thing I like about this design is:

1) Not a huge footprint. I love the showcase cabs but they seem to take up a lot of room. This cab is only about 2 or 3 inches deeper and wider than my Mortal Kombat cabinet.

2) Like a showcase, the control panel could be whatever size or shape you want. No constraints. Even my positional guns would be far enough from the screen to work properly.

3) That modern look (I love classics too, so don't flame).

Nice work!!

The only thing I would change is the size of the control panel. But, you already mentioned that  ;D  You'll have to see if Saint will host a zip file.  ;D, unless you have your own site.

This design really suits itself to Golden Tee as well.

BTW, speaking of Virtua Tennis, any way to get it on a cab short of installing a dreamcast or getting an actual arcade unit?  Is there a PC version.  If so, what type of control does Virtua Tennis use?  The dreamcast used the little analog stick, but I've never seen it in an arcade.

I know that a dreamcast can be hooked up, but I'd rather not have to open my cabinet to turn on my dreamcast, plust it would be a pain to hook the arcade controls to the dreamcast in my particular setup.
I'm wondering if there was ever a PC version released or if there are any rumblings about Mame supporting it anytime soon.

Thorn,
I downloaded your MK cab drawings a while back.
Those MK measurements are what I intend to use to build my cab.
Just wanted to say thanks!

Thorn,
The cab looks pretty cool.  I was thinking of going with a showcase, but I like this design better.  Do you have your measurements in a more printer friendly format by chance?

I've never seen a Virtua Tennis cabinet like that before. They usually come in Net-City cabinets.

I don't like the orange and white net city one, but the one Thorne posted a picture of is like butter.  Futuristic, metal butter.

Am I the only one who hates the look of these 'modern' cabinets?

My fav is still the old Atari stand ups, a la Pole Position.  Not laid back like like gauntlet/golf, cabinets, or (sorry) this one.

Those Atari cab's lines and angles made it look like it's leaning into you; but fast and sleek at the same time, ready take off zooming away from you, yet eager to wrap itself around you and take you along for the ride of your lifetime.

Ehem, sorry, got carried away there.

Not that I "hate" these new cabs, they just look too "relaxed" IMO.

That Virtua Tennis would be the endoskeleton if cabinets were terminators (but not as cool).
Too much blood in the alcohol stream.
