Analog Joystick Hacks
« on: July 16, 2004, 06:56:13 pm »
Sorry, but I can't do a search at the moment.
Comcast has my connection so messed up that it times out on just about everything at the moment.
I am copying this post, so that I can refresh/repost, if I need to.

I won a Happs analog trigger stick recently, which I suspect will have the 5k "arcade" pots in it.
I have a Saitek analog stick laying around, half disassembled, and am wondering if it is possible to hack the 5k pots on the arcade stick directly to the wires from the Saitek--which uses 100k pots on the directional axes.

My thought is that it MAY work, if I recalibrate the stick, and it realizes that it only has 5k worth of throw; but I wanted to know if anyone has successfully accomplished this.

Get your hands on a Dual Strike if you can... it has 5K pots...

I was re-reading my original post, and realized I wasn't entirely clear about what I was intending to do.

I am planning to try placing the 5k pots from the new joystick in series with the 100k pots from the PC stick; and intend to use the 100k pots as a trimmer pot, to adjust the overall resistance so that it equals 100k when the 5k is at it's max.

I may try the Dual Strike option if this doesn't work.

You don't need that at all.

what you loose it the resolution.

the computer is designed to pick up the differences in lets say (for easy calculations) 100 values between min and max.  So for a 100k pot its one value for every 1k.

Replacing a 5k pot you would want a 50 ohm difference to be picked up for the same resolution.

After calibrating the joystick, then its up to the hardware to be able to tell the difference.

But having a range of 0-5k or 100k-105k you are still trying to detect the difference between 5k.  So what the 100k would basically be is a centering dial... but that should be done in calibration.

So replace the pots 100% with the 5k pots.  Then calibrate it and see how it looks.  Note that when calibrating a joystick, you can show raw values.  If you can't see every value between 0-256 you are probably not going to like the solution.

and as a last note... the dual strikes have 20k pots, but only are physically able to move them 1/4 turn (5k range).

And don't forget about Daves board.  Its really great!  I have a dual strike and wouldn't touch it again.
