Good deal/bad deal????
« on: August 17, 2002, 10:53:30 pm »
Well I have to admit I was getting frustrated trying to find any kind of cab and so when a couple came up I grabbed em. I got them for $225 each

I bought an Original Pac Man cab not working and a Robocop that was working until the Monitor yoke was busted off while we were trying to get the back cover off (there was no key so I released a latch through the open coin door and the top back panel fell catching the monitor with the lock  :'( ).

The Pac man seems to have a board problem, when it is powered up the monitor displays no image and some vertical pulsating lines on the right side. In test mode you get no sounds when activating control panel switches. The cab paint is in fair to poor condition, the control panel is a bit worn on the edges and the bezel is peeling in the corners. The marquee looks good though  :-\
They told me board repair was about $40 but upon getting it out of the cab I found one of the connector traces is lifted and the ROM pins are corroded... the rest of the board appears ok but you never know.

The Robocop art and CP are pretty trashed although the marquee and bezel look ok. Since it

Personally I'd give it a thumbs down.  Perhaps I've been spoiled with some of my finds locally (only 5 to date but were VERY good deals all things considered).

At least you got a pacman cab.. that has more value than most.

The pacman board is the most highly diagnosed board out there.. Search google and you will find at least 2 VERY good resource sites (one with 114+ pictures of problems to match to a solution).  However it might involve desoldering/resoldering replacement chips.  Or it could be a fried address board or sync board too.

Sounds like you at least could recover $50 on the board for someone who wanted to risk it.... dunno though. I personally wouldn't pay that for it in the condition you describe, but I know ebayers will.

I wouldn't have paid over $125 or so for the Pac (if monitor worked)... $75 if monitor dead, and $150 for the robocop.... but that's me and I'm cheap  ::)  [Not saying I would have bought either, just giving you a price I'd feel reasonable in assessing them--IF I had wanted them]

Unfortunately you hozed yourself breaking the other monitor.. Sorry to hear that.

It's really tough to find great deals. Also, with the interest in arcade collecting increasing, it's going to get worse - especially for the classics. I paid $200 for a stupid street fighting game (can't remember what it is now) because in it's previous life, it was a Dragon's Lair. I'm now hoping to restore it to it's origianl glory. To me, the price was worth it.

Barely functional Pacs/Ms Pacs  were going for $400 - $600 at an auction I went to about a year ago so you made out alright in my opinion.

Well, if you can restore the pacman cabinet do it.   If oyu don't want to spend the money getting a new pacman board and restoration kits maming it would be intersting, not much room.  The joust cab would be a little more lienient.
