Some Questions
« on: July 13, 2004, 01:50:37 pm »
1)  How far should plexi/glass be in front of Monitor/TV screen?

2) I have a pair of 4.1 speakers I want to use in my cab.  Obviouslly I am putting the sub in the base of cab and front speakers under the marquee.  Where would be the best place to put the rear speakers?  (Cab will most likely be placed up against wall)  I was thinking maybe sides, above marquee (firing upwards), or below CP?  opinions?

3)  Is plexi on CP worth the extra effort?  I was thinking of just using laminate.  I see alot of people are supporters of partsexpress.com stuff.  Any other good materials to use on it?

4)  How many blower fans do most people place in their Cabs?  Do you prefer 12V or 120V fans?  Any recommendations on good products?  I saw some thermaltake 12V ones that have temp sensor built in and adjust the speed accordingly.

1)  Really to your like/dislike.  I have my monitor very close to the glass - maybe 1/2 inch back (the bezel being the 1/2 inch difference).  I like that, gets me up close and personal to the game.  Many games were built that way too - but other games the glass is pretty far away... like Donkey Kong as an example, the glass is almost perpendicular to the floor yet the monitor leans back at like a 45 degree angle, so there is a lot of space.  I would suggest going to an arcade in town and see the different types and decide what you like.

2) Take a look at my webpage on the left - besides the Sub I have 6 other speakers, 2 under the marquee like you normally do - 2 right about the control panel pointed at me and the rears I actually extended back behind me so I get a full "surround" sound going.  I would suggest one of those last two options.

3) I used plexi, I like the idea of being able to clean it easily (as much as you try to avoid it, people's hands can sometimes be dirty/sweaty).  And you also don't want the condensation from the sides of your beer dripping into your controls....

4) I went the easy method and added one standard fan that I already had to the inside, the type you can clip on a pole or something.  I'll be the first to admit that it probably isn't as good as installing actual exhaust or (whatever the reverse of exhaust is) fans to the cab, but it does the job, it is whisper quiet, and strong as an ox.  I've left an electronic themometer in there, with the cab on for days and the temperature never gets much more than room temperature in there.

:) Rotate or die! :)

1) However far out your bezel comes.
If you look at some of the older games, like Asteroids, the bezel goes back quite a ways from the front glass.

2) I would either hang them like Rebirth did, or forget about them.

3) I've never liked the plexi over the CP.
In a home environment, plexi is overkill.
Good laminated art will resist water, and minor scratching, as well as the plexi, and looks better in my opinion.

4) I put two in my cabinet at the upper back, but disconnected them when they made too much noise.
I've got my computer just thrown in the bottom of the cab with no back on that portion.
The holes left by the fans in the monitor area seem to keep that part from overheating as well.

1 Ive got tinted plexi over a TV. In the center(biggest curve of the tv screen) the plexi is only about 1/8"
2 Depending on your CP, maybe in there, firing out? Ive got 2.1- 2 behind the marquee, sub in the bottom of the cab. The TV im using has stereo speakers on the sides, plugged into the rear channel on my sound card. Adds a lttle bit of depth to the sound, I like it
3 Currently Ive just got contac paper over my CP, with 1/8" lexan over that. When I get a real overlay printed, Im just gonna get the good stuff and skip the lexan/plexi
4 The only fan Im running in there is the one on the CPU. the motherboard is mounted near the bottom of the back side of the cab, so its a large open space, with some vent holes leading up into the marquee and then outside. When I had it in the front area, I had a 120mm blowing out- without it it would overheat after 10-15 minutes and shut down
