Laminate? Plz help
« on: July 12, 2004, 12:02:45 am »
I bought a used cab on the weekend and its in pretty good shape.  However, the side art is scratched up pretty bad.  I will probobly be replacing the main control panel with something I build as well.  Was just wondering what the best peel and stick product is best for finishing a cab's surface and where it can be bought?  I live in canada, so home depot etc is all avail.  Thanks in advance!

I'm not certain there's much in the way of "peel'n'stick" laminate
 as such..
contact paper, yes..
stick on flooring tiles, if you want..:-)

...but laminate will be more along the lines of:

lay cab on side
roll contact cement on the cab
roll contact cement on laminate
apply laminate
(apply pressure with a laminate roller or rolling pin or your hands to seat it, especially at the the edges of the cab)
flush/trim router around the side to trim laminate perfectly
flip cab over, repeat other side.
done..

it's as easy as it sounds, and you'll end up with a very nice solid abuseable <g> finish on the sides.
Pull a year and a half strike- it's over 4eva..
besides, WHL rocks!

Most people don't put laminate on the sides, they just strip the old paint, repaint it and apply sideart.  The art on the side is peel and stick a lot of times, because essentially it's just a big sticker. But, I have heard of people selling old sideart that doesn't have the adhesive on it anymore because they peeled it off of an old cabinet.

As far as the control panel though, if you can find one that would fit your panel, you can buy overlays that are essentially stickers.  Or, if you're making a Mame cabinet and just want something standard, you can buy some peel and stick black laminate from Home Depot or Lowes...unless the stores there suck like mine and for some reason only carry the white.
The default personal text is is "I'm a llama!"???  I guess that makes me an emperor with a new a groove.

they make a peel and stick formica/countertop-grade laminate? Or is it a light duty product?
