Bad Buttons?
« on: July 08, 2004, 09:21:38 pm »
I'm heading out to the Happ Store tomorrow and I know that 2 of my buttons (P1 #2&5) are bad.  The question is, is the microswitch bad, the button bad, or both?  Do buttons even go bad?  Or do the microswitches just wear out?  It's like the button will randomly register...sometimes for a moment, then sometimes it is "stuck", yet the button itself is not stuck in a depressed position.

What do you guys make of it?
Dumb questions deserve dumb answers.

If the button depresses and returns to its normal position then it is fine.  This sounds like the microswitch is the culprit.

Check for a loose connection. I had a button that would sometimes register twice on a single push once in awhile. It was annoying when playing Missile Command.  I solved the problem by tightening the quick disconnect.

What kind of buttons are they?  Is the micro switch mounted vertically or horizontally?

The Happs with the vertical micro-switches can sometimes have prolems due to wear on the part that activates the microswitch.  They are also prone to not registering if they are mounted with the switch paralell to your arm beacuse there is enough slop in the button that it can be moved away from the micro-switch when you hit it.  If this is the case you can rotate them 90 degrees to eliminate this problem.

Overall the horizontals are more reliable.

Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!
