Crazy Kong Junior (PICTURES ADDED)
« on: July 07, 2004, 05:31:03 pm »
I bought a Crazy Kong Junior cabinet from a local company for my mame cabinet.
The more I looked into it the more I found out this is a really rare knockoff of Donkey Kong Jr.

So to get extra money for the project I am going to sell the marquee, the board, and the control panel. The only problem is I don't know how much to sell it for on ebay because it's so rare I have nothing to compare to. I'm also not sure if there is enough demand for this thing, but it's ebay and who knows.

What do you think is a fair starting price?

I have no idea how rare a Crazy Kong Junior cabinet is, but as far as it's "worth" goes, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.  ;)

isn't crazy kong junior a needed dumo for MAME?  ???

If so, you might consider donating the board to them.

What condition is the cab in? Is it working, sideart intact, marquee good, etc... Do you have a pic?

I, like Sasquatch!, don't really know how rare it is...but if it is rare and in good condition...it would be a real shame to part it out and maim it (pun intended  ;D ) when there are so many empty/generic cabs to be had for a song...

The thing is, is that the cabinet does work, but the monitor doesn't. You can hear the game working and everything and if you want to pretend to be stevie wonder at an arcade you can try and play the game, without much luck.

I have already taken everything off the cabinet, but it would be very easy to put everything back together for a picture or two. I bought this thing for $50, well $40, the guy I bought it from saw a tiny crack in the monitor bezel and gave me a 10 back. If I can get more money for keeping it intact and just buying another cabinet I surely will do that.

Infact, very few of the Crazy Kong Junior cabinets only put "Crazy Junior" on the marquee to save space, and I just happen to have one of them!

KLOV still needs all the pics of this game, so please put it back together and shoot some pictures of it.

If the only thing wrong is the monitor, I would replace that, sell the cab, and use the money to buy a new, generic cab to make into a MAME project.

i collect classic marquees. i would pay $50-$100 if the marquee is in decent shape.

the pcb might sell for about $250 on ebay. but before you try and sell it you should get in touch with Randy at the mame dumping project and discuss having the board dumped.

a full working crazy kong jr cab in great condition might sell for 800-1200 bucks.

but u never know, some insane collector might pay more.

Really, REALLY appreciate it.

And, as pocketbikez said, contact Randy at www.targets.mame.net to go about dumping the board first.

Ok definetly changed my mind about this giving the figures you just gave me!!!

There are a few thing I would like to say about the cabinet just to throw out there to see if it is better to sell parted or intact. The bottom left corner of the monitor bezel has a crack and the monitor bezel itself has scratches in the middle. Is there anyway to fix the scratches and/or the crack?

Also the T-molding is kind of old, and pink but i can fix that.

thanks so much for posting these pics. my imagination has been running wild thinking about how the cab might look.

the cab has a lot more artwork than i expected. the control panel graphic even looks like it was silkscreened. top notch stuff  :)

now i wonder how much different the gameplay and graphics are compared to the original dk junior.

keep us posted on what you do with the cab. If you end up parting it out i am interested in buying the marquee.

please dont sell the pcb until randy hoffman contacts you about borrowing the boards to get the roms dumped.

With dumping, do I get the pcb back?

and will it be able to work with the cabinet anymore?

I have no idea what dumping entails.

Yes, to both questions.

Dumping is basically just "reading" what's on the chips, much like you would with a disk.

The chips on the PCB are memory chips, but are permanently burned with data in given spots.

If you have the (really expensive) equipment to do it, you can get a bit-by-bit read of what is contained on each chip at each memory location.

That is the program that makes each game unique.

from what i understand they plug the pcb into something and it copies the data from the roms onto a pc. there is no harm done to the pcb and it is exactly the same as before. they will even pay for your shipping costs and ship it right back to you afterwards. you could ask to have your nickname posted on the crazyjunior mameinfo.dat as the contributor. your name will be in mame forever.

Dude, why mame it? You could make a small fortune selling that cabinet. enough to buy yourself ten cabinets to mame.

It is your property, but man, talk about kicking yourself in the wallet.

Since it's obviously a conversion, I think you should swap out that Midway coin door and fix it up...they're not made anymore, ya know...

How is it a conversion?
The artwork, marquee, and monitor bezel are all original.

I'm not sure if the coin door is from a different cab, but I'm sure everything else is.

Have a read of this:
http://unemulated.emuunlim.com/how_to_dump/index.html

It explains most of the process.

Whilst he mentions you paying postage both ways, if you're not willing, I'm sure the dumping project will cover the cost. It's cheaper than bidding against insane collectors on ebay who just want the board for themselves.

Definately try to get dumps...

but you might ask that they not release the dumps until after you sell the cab.  You might expect a 25% decrease in value after its mamed.  I believe they will do it for you.

As for dumping the roms.  Send the board out to someone.  I don't know whos considered the best mame dumper in the US.  It looks like an easy dump (no expensive hardware needed).  But it would also be nice if the dump can be confirmed (Maybe even a driver thrown together if the hardware is similar to other games).  Imagine finding that one of the graphic chips was misdumped... and then the game sold to a collector who would never dump them.

Get someone with a monitor to check that out.  Find out what type it is and see if you can get a replacement.  It will increase what you can sell it for by more then the value of the monitor.. (ie, 40bucks compared to 800-1000).

DON'T REPLACE THE PINK TMOLDING unless you find more pink tmolding of the same exact color.  I believe most collectors would rather have old original, then wrong and new.  Anyone who spends a 800+ on a cab will know how to replace tmolding and would probably prefer to have the original.  Also, that cab is so gawd darn ugly and pink... its GREAT!

Why does the value go down 25% once it is dumped?
Is it because it will be in mame and anyone can download it,
or just because of the fact it was dumped?

I would like to get this thing dumped but if it is going to seriously jeopardise the sale of this cabinet I'm not sure I'm willing to take that chance.

The value decreases because its readily available in ROM format.  Request that they not release the ROM until after you have sold that cabinet.

Just $.02 throw in here... if it's known that you refused to dump the roms because you were afraid that it would effect the amount of cash that you would get out of it, I'd say it would make you a pretty unpopular fellow, and considering you only thought of this as a $40 mame project when you started out, I'd say it would make you a pretty selfish one too.  Don't get me wrong, but there are people out there that would love to make sure that this went into a warehouse and NEVER got anywhere near MAME.  I'd say that everyone here has been pretty helpful and supportive, so to thumb your nose at the whole community would look pretty bad.  As I said, Just my $.02 (or two cents -25% if it makes you feel better)

I, like anyone would love to give back to the MAME community, and i am very seriously considering dumping it, I just didn't want to shoot myself in the foot before doing so.  At the time I really didn't know what dumping entailed, just the word "dumping" doesn't really sound very positive off the bat. Now that I have read up on it, it sounds like a pretty safe process, and I will contact randy hoffman in the near future.

For someone going into college, and only having a part-time job, anything involving money I look at very carefully. It might sound snobby at times, but I'm just being careful.

I do thank everyone severly for helping me with this particular cabinet, along with other questions I've had. You are all very helpful and kind people. I will keep you posted on any decisions i make concerning the cabinet.

Not trying to be a party pooper here, but whats the big deal with this game? Like the first Crazy Kong, its just a crummy bootleg of an existing game. Colors are different, music is mangled, and levels are in a different order.

Sure, I'd like to see it MAME'd just for archival sake, but it's not like we're seeing anything rare in the context of the Atari prototypes.
It's doubtful this machine is even as valuable as a real DK Jr to a collector. ???

Hehe atta boy.  I honestly suggest that you work it so that you keep that cab, as you -may- regret selling it later, as we all envy a guy with a one-of-a-kind cabinet.  But DO have them dump it...what happens if your board craps (no pun intended) out on you, and there are no copies of the roms to make new chips?   Just a thought :)

I'm almost certain I won't keep it because realistically I won't really get much out of it. I mean I love that I found, or stumbled upon a rare cabinet but if I do keep it,  it will probably just sit in my basement. It should be in someones collection that really appreciates it and is actually going to use it.

I'm curious if all that pink used to be RED. Sunlight can wreak havoc on red dyes and paints...

And DUMP THE ROMS. There's nothing to "think about".

the t-molding is pink even underneath so the odds it was once red are doubtful, but then again, the odd some one would think that pink looked appealing was also very doubtful.

Sure, I'd like to see it MAME'd just for archival sake, but it's not like we're seeing anything rare in the context of the Atari prototypes.
It's doubtful this machine is even as valuable as a real DK Jr to a collector. ???

I agree I don't think it's that valuable.  And I'm wondering why it has Donkey Kong artwork, instead of Jr.

The cabinet/Roms are valuable just due to the rarity.  How many DK cabinets were made, and how many DKjr cabinets were made?  Plenty.  Now if this was a moon patrol that had been painted black and a cheesy bootleg marquee shoved in the slot, it would be different... but this one is well done.  Now I'm not saying that it is not a conversion, but it's got sideart, marquee and funky t-molding, bezel, the whole bit.  How many of these things can there be floating around?
Hell, I'd give him a good buck for it if, and I didn't ever much like DK jr.

Funny thing, there are a lot of people that I have come across in my dealings, that like/remember Crazy Kong more than the original DK.  You could do that coolio cheat in CK that you couldn't in the original, and these things get their own subculture/following.  Don't dismiss the clones so easily.
