question about existing stick in the cab I'm converting
« on: July 07, 2004, 10:24:07 am »
I am getting ready to MAME my Galaga 3 cabinet (which was converted from Pac-man). It was not a great conversion - they just painted black over the Pac-Man art , added a fire button on each side of the stick, and put a generic striped CPO on it. The only legit piece is the Galaga 3 marquee.

Anyway, I'm assuming that since it used to be Pac-Man that the stick is a 4-way. What I'm wondering is, would it be possible to use this stick as the 4-way stick in my MAME machine and just add a couple of 8-ways? If so, is it any harder to wire than new 4-way sticks?

Thanks for any info!

Did you LOOK at it?
If not, why not? You'd end up answering your own question. Most joysticks are just sticks that press 4 buttons (even in 8-ways).

So yeah, they are just as easy to wire.
NO MORE!!

Actually, no I haven't. Haven't gotten that far :(

I'm just starting to take things out of it, the board, the marquee, etc. Plus I haven't ordered any parts yet, so I don't have a new stick to compare it to.

Glad that it will work though - thanks for the info!

I don't know that it is. I've tried sanding for great lengths of time and haven't made it through the black paint. But there are places on the back where stickers or something were where you can see yellow. Plus, inside there's a list of what score gets you an extra Pac-Man.

But the cab is not at all in the best shape.

Stop sanding dude you need to at least try and save the game. You need to strip the paint rather than sanding it. It won't take long and you'll soon figure out whether it is salvagable or not.
