Could use a hand from Act-labs user
« on: July 01, 2004, 01:11:19 pm »
So I set them up in XP (just on the PC monitor first) and am able to get 2 guns going with area51 (this just rocks!) but with Jurassic park i'm having accuracy issues.  Any tips on how to get them more accurate? (I did the calibration on both guns inside the game)  each time it seems I am to the left (sometimes alot)

And for the record once you have the gun in your hand, you really don't think of the marvin the martian gun at all...
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

Bumping this because, not matter what, I can't get this one game to calibibrate. Does it even have a calibration menu? Using my act-labs gun, the accuracy is way off. Its fine in every other game i've played

edit: yep I'm definitely sure I tried that and it didn't work for me--must be the way mine is set up or maybe its mameanalog+ differences.  basically i get no keyboard input once the game is in the calibration screen. hmm just had a thought since its only looking for a mouse maybe i could calibrate with the trackball..will have to give that a go

I posted on that forum over there, but I'll repeat it here:

I just wanted to point out that Terminator 2 and Revolution X are not lightgun games. They used positional joysticks.

Anyways, I've tried playing them with a lightgun and they're not even close since the positional joysticks have continuous tracking and the lightguns can't move around the screen quickly nor smoothly.

It just goes to show that just because a game is marked as "gun" in MAME it doesn't mean lightgun.

I believe these games are also POT joystick games (dressed up as guns):
Lucky & Wild
Jurassic Park

Although "The Lost World : Jurassic Park" and "Jurassic Park III" are lightgun games.

Take a look at the cabinets for some of these games and you can clearly see the difference between positional joystick games and lightgun games:

Jurassic Park: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8262
Jurassic Park III: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8263
Lost World: Jurassic Park, The: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8457
Lucky & Wild: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8462
Revolution X: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=9308
Terminator 2: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=12756

Anyways, it comes as no surprise that the positional joystick games are difficult to set up using a light gun - because it would be like using a 270 degree wheel on a 360 degree wheel game.

For Term2, you can calibrate by starting game with lightgun and mouse disabled (use keyboard), exit, restart game with lightgun enabled.

As for Jurrasic park, jeeze, there is no way you can play that with a PC lightgun.  (It would only be possible if the gun tracked live all the time and you could hold down the button, which none ot he current PC guns can do.)  I'll see if I can find my lightgun from under all the other stuff in my "inputs box" and test on my machine. ;)

wow--look what a good thread revival gets you  ;)  So once its calibrated once, thats it, its good forever?  From there on out I would just calibrate the light gun as per usual?  Might make it worth the hassle  :P

Best bet for T2 is get the nvram file from http://www.retroblast.com/files.html

And just drop it in your nvram folder. Hey presto! Guns already calibrated!

If T2 can work with a light gun, then i'm sure jurassic park can. I just need to figure out how to calibrate it.
