six button per player setup (slikstik)?
« on: June 29, 2004, 10:05:42 pm »
Hello!

I'm setting up a the control panel for my cabinet, and am curious about some of the configurations that are out there.

I know that slikstik has a setup where there are six pushbuttons per player?

Are there any games that have a use for so many???

I realize that you could probably program some of the newer games to support those buttons instead of using the keyboard.

but....Mame???

It seems like overkill to me, but maybe I'm wrong. I just don't want to waste my money buying buttons I'm not going to use. Not to mention taking up control panel real estate.

Thanks in advance!

6 buttons are used for Capcom fighting games like Street Fighter.  If you are not interested in fighting games, you'd probably be happy with 4 buttons in a neogeo configuration.

You can use sortinfo to get a rough idea of what games need 6 buttons:

You might find a few people (like me) also have a 7 button layout.  4 buttons along the button for neo-geo games, the six grouped together for SF games.

Do you play the neo-geo games?  That's 4 buttons wide - that's the important dimension we're concerned with.  Having buttons above them doesn't really impact on space.

You just need to work out if you think there's any games out there that you play or like to play and if you want to try and recreate the button layout to suit.

So do you set up the 7 buttons like this???

4
   1   2   3
   4   5   6

OR

4
   1   2   3
   5   6   7

Mine is setup wrong right now and I want to get it correct for NEO-GEO and Street Fighter.

It would be more like this ...

  5 6 7
2 3 4  <--- This is the 4 buttons layout for neogeo games...
1

Then you just have to configure mame to use the four ones for Neogeo and for tjhe other games the six group buttons

Thanks Gentlemen!

Actually, the way I had mine set up were two rows of three:

123
456

But now I see that there is actually a need for all these buttons. I went ahead and checked out how many games were using 6 buttons and it was something ike 167!!

I had no idea. And now even seven! I guess the folks at Slikstick knew
what they were doing.

I'm not a huge fan of the street fighter games, but I want my cabinet to be able to handle everything (or close to it).

So actually, 7 buttons (the way slikstick has their 4 player setup) is the way to go?

thanks in advance!

well i play neogeo games often, and on my CP i went for the standard 6 button capcom

123
456

neogeo games are totally playable with this setup, the 7 button is for the perfectionist people who want that specific arcade feel but personally 6 buttons are enough for me. its pretty much personal preference.

I wouldn't really say it's a perfectionist type of thing. It's one extra button, $1.50 and 2 minutes total cost? A LOT easier to add when building then changing your mind later.

Not necessarily.

There are NO arcade games with more than two players and more than 4 buttons each.

SlikStik includes the extras for symmetry, and for console (Nintendo 64 emulators, Playstation emu's) or PC games.
