Perfect 360 or Happs Supers for a newbie to fighters?
« on: June 28, 2004, 11:14:34 pm »
Well I actually have TWO of each joystick (p360 and supers).  I've connected them up to a temporary control panel and I am just plain TERRIBLE at fighting games.  I can't consistently have Ryu throw a fireball (thats how bad I am...)

Now, I realize that this might be personal preferance but I'm looking for opinions.

Which joystick would you recommend for a newbie such as myself?  The p360 or the supers?

I'm interesting in playing mainly capcom games (Marvel vs Capcom espicially)...

(I'll also be playing a lot of Metal Slug though...)

I have 2 of each as well.  Since you already have the P360, I would use those.  I think that they are really nice for most games, and once you get used to them, they are great for fighters too.  At first, the hardest move for me to do was Ryu's dragon punch, but with after a little practice, I was able to pull off just about any move consistently.

Well, I can't really do any moves on it what-so-ever...

I'll probably use the p360's since it *seems* as though more people recommend them, but every now and again I do hear that people prefer other joysticks...

Anybody else have any opinions on this?

I lilke competitions for fighters. Special moves seem to be relatively easy to pull off.

Yeah, the supers do not feel anywhere near as stiff as the p360's do.   Perhaps you can replace the spring on them to make them not feel as stiff?

Anybody else have any suggestions for me?

I'm not asking "whats the best joystick for me" (plenty of threads about that already), but more specifically the best joystick for a newbie at fighting games (capcom specifically).

It seems as though lots of people say the P360's are the cream of the crop, but then just as many say that other joysticks (competitions, supers, etc) are better...

Anybody else have any opinions on this?

I've used Comps since I've been building my arcade....can't complain too much, but it almost seems like you have to move the comps a little farther to make sure the switches are triggered/released. I don't remember having to move the sticks that much in the arcade.  I can't seem to get the timing for the 81 hit combos in KI like I can in the arcade with the comps in my cp either.... ???

I just got my hands on some p360's but they sent the wrong sleeves with the sticks for the wood panel, so I can't fasten the sticks with the e-clip so I have to wait until the correct sleeves come in before I can hook them up. (I'll also have to rout a horizontal footprint on my cp since I mounted my comps vertically  :P)

Most 'good' arcades have p360s in them for SF games.  It's personal preference, though.

Spinning Piledriver moves = easier on the p360
Dragon Punch moves = easier on the Competition/Super

Marvel vs Capcom 1 - doesn't matter, all you gotta do is the War Machine double team :)

Aceldamor, I'm sorry to hear that they sent you the wrong sleeves.  The ones they sent me didn't seem to have the correct size e-clip but I was able to make it fit.

I've been trying out both the supers and the p360 and I STILL can't seem to even do a fireball in any fighting game... (down --> down/forward --> forward --> punch button)

Sometimes I can do the fireball if I do  backward --> backward/down --> down --> down/forward --> forward --> punch, but I shouldn't have to do a half circle, only a quarter circle...

Can I be doing something wrong?  Am I just plain dumb or something? :)

I really wish somebody would make a FAQ about fighting games for newbies.  One that would explain exact joystick movements, etc.

The supers work fine for me, and I play MVC often.

Make sure you are pressing the forward and punch keys at the same time:
down --> down-forward--> forward & punch
(same for special moves, just hit 2 punches or 2 kicks.)

I did a quick search for moves: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/4783/mvcfaq.html

You may also want to try the "keythis" program here
http://www.retroblast.com/files.html
It will allow you to see exactly what keys you are pressing.

I have found this very useful in troubleshooting my controllers :)
