Changeable button lighting

I thought to myself, wouldn't it be cool if you had illuminated buttons, but only the ones needed for a specific game would light up?

A dream I thought, but then today I ran across a usenet posting by someone selling exactly that: A circuit board that will run off a PC and light up different light configurations (or even do animation):

There was a member, dinoroger, here a while back that was working on a project very similar to that.  It was called LAME I think.  DinoRoger kind of dropped of the map though

It isn't a new idea, someone pops up with this idea every couple of months and you get to look at someone implementation.

 Actaully... theres a lot of cool ideas that are on this that wernt on dinorodegers device.  

 I love the idea... but hope it goes even further.   IE: adding selenoid and motor drivers.

 However... why not go all the way and get that 'PC pinball machine controller' pcb built so that we can use it for mame cabs as well as for use in dead pinballs, custom handmade pins, and more.

WOW!! I just got an Email back from the person selling these and they are not cheap ! He quoted me $499 for the version with touch response. Looks like my lights will remain on.

here's the email he sent me:

"Hi - the base price of the system is $699, but that is somewhat negotiable.
I use only the best rock-solid parts, which drives the price up a bit, but
it makes for a very long-lasting product.

I'm kinda catering to "those who want only the best".  It limits my market,
but I've found that the volume it creates is right about what I can handle.
I hand make these and put alot of time into each one.
