How much PC and assorted Q's
« on: June 23, 2004, 05:32:23 pm »
Hello,
Read the Faqs but still have some Q's. Building a bartop for my friend, my project is on standstill.

He's looking to play some assorted games and I need to know what type of computer to look for in the newspapers (cheap deals, crosses fingers). Most games will be Neo Geo (Metal Slug, All-Star Baseball, some fighting games), however he wants a few Mame games (Simpsons, TMNT) think mid 80s to mid 90s games. Now I know Mame mainly uses processor speed but I was thinking of using a different emulator to run Neo Geo games (cause I know there are emus out there that can run it faster than mame, any suggestions for emus). With all this in mind, what do you suggest?

Thank you for all your help! ;D

Edit: Just realized that there were no "assorted Q's", sorry.

Yeah I read that but was still a bit unsure, seeing as how I would be using a better Neo Geo emu (any suggestions) but still wanted some Mame games (TMNT, Simpsons, possibly Street Fighter Alpha 3, Marvel Superheros). Anyone running a low to mid-end computer playing similar games?

Since you're going to be running a faster Neo Geo emulator, you could get away with less PC.

Since you also want to use Mame for some of these games, the first statement is negated.

You might want to specify exactly what you're looking for. For example. Ask 2 questions:

"I'm planning on using "Neogeo emulator X" to play "Neogeo game X" (whare neogeo game x is the highest end neogeo game you plan on running) What speed computer should I shoot for to be able to handle this game?

Question 2 - Replace all neogeo with mame in the above question

Ok I can do that.

Ok I plan to play Mortal Kombat 3 (i think that is pretty high-end huh) on Mame. What type of computer power am I looking to get?

I plan to play Samurai Showdown and Metal Slug on Neo-RAGEx (assuming its the best emulator for Neo Geo). What type of computer power am I looking to get?

I was going to recommend Neo-Rage.

I think you are probably looking for something in the neighborhood of a Duron 700, but I don't play fighters so I could be WAY off. . .

Mortal Kombat 1, 2, or 3 are gonna require quite a lot, most likely around a P4 2+ghz system

Mortal Kombat is a hrd to run game though. Other than mortal kombat, tekken, and .chd files, you should be fine on a p3 1.8 or less.

If you're going with a system to play MK3 don't bother going with a different emulator for NEO-GEO games.  NeoRageX uses different ROM sets than MAME and could be difficult to find.  Also NRX hasn't been updated in years and doesn't fully support all NEO-GEO sets.

Mortal Kombat 3 is the most intensive of the MK games, and it doesn't take a 2+ gHz machine to run.  I run it perfectly on an AMD XP1800+, and I believe I've seen other folks post on here that can run it on less than that.

That being said, you might have to use an older version of MAME to accomplish this.  I haven't upgraded my MAME version in quite some time because they haven't added any games that I care to play in a long time.

Mortal Combat ran perfect on an Athlon XP 1400 on my home computer (My cab uses a Celeron 2 ghz HP I got for free!).
