as long as it isn't vertical you'll be ok.

hmm...got it ;D

horizontal buttons..nothing is better then those :o

ultimate buttons dont feel right(not right size) and comp look and feel very cheap...comp buttons are like the buttons on official agetec dreamcast joystick .DONT go with comp buttons at any cost..

yes i have seen every kind of the buttons.even the x-arcade buttons..they are from china..they look similer to horizontal buttons...very good onces...x-arcade buttons are second choice.contact x-arcade manager..he sold me 20 buttons for $9.95.that is very good deal compare to horizontal from happ which is like closed to $2 each..

Gonna have to disagree with you there Snaake, competition push buttons feel actually reallllly good for games where you're pushing the buttons a lot.  They feel very light under your fingers, which I suppose could give them a semi-cheap feel, but I personally might go with em on my next fighter sticks.  Horizontal push buttons have the same feel as competitions, except they feel a lot more like the arcade fighting game buttons.  (Although my local Capcom vs SNK 2 machine has competitions on it.)
Before I knew which buttons felt like which, I built my first arcade joystick with vertical pushbuttons, and they're WAYYYY stiff, I've used em enough now where they're almost as soft as horizontal pushbuttons, but their definitely not what you should buy if you're buying your buttons new.  I wouldn't suggest buying X-arcade buttons just because they are cheaper than the Happs ones and I'm pretty sure it's for a good reason, or else X-arcade would make all it's money selling pushbuttons for cheaper.
So if you're going to be playing only fighting games, get competitions, they're the best in my opinion, but if you're going to be playing a lot of different arcade games, definitely go with horizontal pushbuttons, they feel realllly good when pushed, and are way easy to install.

I have some of them all (got 100+ buttons on ebay for super cheap).

As long as their all the same, you will be fine.

I like verticals myself.  You don't have to take off the microswitch to install the button.  Sounds stupid, but I have changed my control panel a few to many times.

The horizontals are also great (and cheap if they are still on sale at happs..)

Don't go for any weird ones.

Leaf switchs if you can find them are GREAT for old games.  Asteroids didn't click when you pressed them.  They also have more feel to them.

But they don't make a difference for fighting games... and their harder to install.. take more room... more expensive... and well... don't click and fighter buttons always have.

my $0.02 cents of personal opinions...

I've used all 3 types of buttons...
Competiton, Ultimate Vertical, and Ultimate Horizontal.

After trying all 3, I personally don't really like the vertical one...
it somehow feels disconnect because you're not really pressing on it, but you're pressing down a thing that pushes the switch which is mounted sideways..... (it is easier to mount and unmount, but game play is more important to me.... and hopefully, I don't need to mount/unmount it too much... hee hee...  ;D  ;D)

if you need to press buttons VERY QUICKLY with quick release, then competition should be better... the button is somewhat lighter (or just lighter feel...) my friend said it is MUCH better feel for virtual fighter for PS2... (yes.. I have a PSX hack for the stick...) he said he can do combo and then tab the guard button in the middle of it and cancel it... (and with lightning speed.... he claims.... haaa haaa....   ;D  ;D )

Just for looking and fighting games, I find the ultimate horizontal best and have most real arcade feel.... but when I play track and field, my record still holds with the competition buttons... they really are faster.....

for me, bottom line is... I'll install "Ultimate Horizontal" on my cab.... (well.... that is.... when it gets to that part.... its still pieces of wood now....  >:(   will need to hurry up.....)
but after I made a few joysticks... I've spent too much time playing Mame with my sticks.... no time in doing cab... haaa haa.....     ;D  ;D  ;D

of course... every person has different preference... if I didn't remember wrong, a lot of Neo-Geo games out there uses competition buttons... so, if you're used to those games, you might like competition more....

;D  ;D  ;D

Another Brilliant mind ruined by education....  :p

Yeah, those competition pushbuttons feel a lot like my brother's neo geo buttons, they remind me A LOT of the japanese sit down cabinet's buttons, all of em are like the competitions, but they're made differently, so it doesn't feel identical.  Basically if you don't want to use buttons that feel specifically designed for fighters, then definitely go with the horizontals, otherwise the competitions are great.

If I don't get x-arcade buttons in some days (out-of-stock)
I will buy competition on happ because I play especially fighting games, sometimes other games but especially fighting games (the king of fighters saga is great !!)
thank you for your eight answers :)

I just bought 20 buttons and a couple joysticks in an auction from X-Gaming (X-Arcade) on ebay for $19.95 (seller ID is xgamingauctions).  The buttons are about 1/4" shorter than Happ's horizontals.  The threads on the x-arcade buttons will only allow a maximum CP thickness of 3/4", so you couldn't use this with 3/4" MDF and 1/8" Lexan.  If you're using 5/8" board and Lexan or just skipping the Lexan, you'd be ok.

I will say that the x-arcade buttons do feel fairly solid.  They are a lot springier/stiffer than Happ's.  One bad thing is that they only come in black.  Personally, I'm sticking with the Happ horizontals, unless I can find some long translucent leaf switch buttons :) .

MrToasty that's great information re: the x-arcade buttons... I'm currently waiting for my order of 20 buttons and 2 joysticks to arrive... is there anything that you noticed different about the 2 joysticks from
x-arcade ?  I was under the impression they were just like happ supers except branded for the x-arcade ....

sorry if I'm draggin this off topic(From buttons to joysticks)

rampy,

The joysticks aren't much different from the supers.  General design is the same and the bushings/actuators are very similar, but the switches don't appear to be the same Cherry switches used in the supers - switches are black and white with black button, also X-Gaming branded.  The switches are the same springier, stiffer ones that you get with the buttons.  Could still be Cherry but I don't think so.  You don't get the two different plastic pieces that let you choose the shaft length either, so you're stuck with one length which seems to be comparable to the longer of the two pieces for the super.  I haven't opened them up yet to see if there are any differences inside.

If anyone else buys from their auctions, just be aware that the buttons you get are not the ones shown in the auction (at least not right now), which look like Happ's horizontal.  They are standard size diameter 1 1/8" buttons and look almost identical to the Happ buttons from the top.  I've already emailed them and suggested that they change the picture they are using.

My thoughts too, still a great deal - $0.50 for each button and $5 for each stick.  I'll find a use for the buttons like side pinball flipper buttons or for racking up credits or I've got a couple friends looking to build cabs too.
