What size holes for the control panel???
« on: June 15, 2004, 06:12:13 am »
Hi guys,

I am having my control panel top made tomorrow, and as something different, it is being made from high sheen aluminium check plate.

I got a call today to say to call in tomorrow with the control panel layout so they can cut the holes for the buttons and the joysticks.

Button holes are 28mm, but the joysticks I am unsure of.  I am getting the J-Stik (Japanese) Ball-Tops as seen at http://www.ultimarc.com/controls.html

Anyone know what size holes have to be cut for them?  I was told 20mm,but that seems really small.  Please correct me or guide me in the right direcion, I need to know tomorrow  :-\
The internet, hey... so they have that on computer's now???

Cut the same size hole for the J-Stiks as buttons.  I have a couple of J-Stiks mounted, using this method and they work great.  Actually, I think the general rule for all (digital) sticks is to use the same size hole as buttons.

Sorry, but I'm a bit confused.   :-[

Does this mean I need to cut a 34mm hole to fit the joystick from underneth?  I thought you just dismantled the joystick, fit the base and then slid the shaft through, and reassembled.

Is this incorrect?  ???

You don't need to disassemble J-Stiks, just unscrew the ball top and remove the dust washer, and fit the stick from underneath.

edit: and no, use a 28mm hole.

The best way is:
Cut the exact size that you can see if you uncover the plastic cover so that the shatft can move freely. Note that you have to leave some aditional size if your CP is thick ...

But yes ... I believe 34-36 mm should be Ok ... test on a shoebox before going for the CP ...

Good advice....but from experience I can tell you 28mm is enough, even on a thick wood panel.

One thing to watch if you DO use a bigger hole, is that it is not so big that when you move the stick the dust washer moves, and reveals the hole...

Yap ... I've seen some commercial ones with that problem ...  :) because they are using a small cover ...

Anyway I believe you have enought to go on ...  ;)
