Any examples of installing monitor glass/plexi?

I'm comming to the part of my project where I need to know how I'm going to mount the glass in front of my cab and I'm not quite sure how I will mount it.

Any examples will do... pictures, drawings even a description.

I don't have any good pictures of that part of my cab - I'll have to take some.  I'll try to put into words what I did:

- I went with clear glass (some like smoked glass), 1/4 inch thick.  A 30"x24" sheet was about $30

- On the left and right side of my cabinet, the  montior opening space, I put two stips of 1x1 wood (painted black).  The wood is recessed from the front edge of the cab by a touch more than 1/4".  The glass "rests" on these strips of wood, so that the glass is almost flush with the side of the cab.  If you want the glass recessed a bit, just install the wood strips a bit deeper into the cab.

- On the bottom, I have wood that the glass rests on as well.  You could do a similar recessed wood strip thing.  I got a U shapped clear plastic channel thing from Home Depor (it is reaklly a rope light holder), I put that on top of the wood on the bottom and the glass slides down into it (into the open part of the U).  

- On the top I have nothing, there is a 1/4" gap between the underneath of my marquee box (where some of the speakers are) and the cab - so to install the glass I push it up into this gap about 1 inch and then slide it down into the U channel on the bottom.  To remove it to clean or whatever, just slide it up a bit and pop it out.

I used angle iron on the sides of the cab with magnetic tape on the glass.  The glass rests on MDF on the bottom.  If I had it to over again I would probably use velcro - the magnetic tape didn't adhere very well.

My cab (Reactor) already had a groove at the bottom of the monitor and an angle to the bottom of the marquee that hold the plexi in place.

Hmmm... I like the velcro idea.  Do you think you'd be able to see the sticky side through the glass?  I'm pretty sure I'm going to use smoked so that would probably help.

I've been digging through my site trying to find pics of how my glass mounts. This is the best I could come up with:

Here's a pic of my cab when I first got it, the glass rests on the two brackets that run along the inside above the monitor. In the back it slips into a groove, at the front it rests in a recess in the board you can see in front of the monitor.



After you put the glass in (actually it's plexi in this case), the control panel goes across the top of it in the front. Once it's clamped down the glass is securely held in by the groove in the back and the CP in the front.



BTW, these pics were taken some time ago. The cab has since been finshed with some nice artwork.

Hmmm... I like the velcro idea.  Do you think you'd be able to see the sticky side through the glass?  I'm pretty sure I'm going to use smoked so that would probably help.

I have smoked glass with a black surround painted onto the back.

I prefer using a carboard bezel behind the glass, instead of painting the glass. First, it's really hard to get perfect professional looking edges when painting. Second, it can be easy to mess up and get paint where you don't want it. Third, by not painting, that leaves you the option in the future to change your bezel to one with artwork on it.

Some valid points.  I found if I was careful and used a razor, however, it was really easy to get the masked edges straight.  Also any paint that winds up where it shouldn't be can be removed from glass (but not plexi!) with a Razor when dry.

Anyway, I think I hijacked the thread here, back to the topic of attaching glass/plexi!

Yes I did paint it. The artwork looks much nicer in the pics than it did in real life. It had been badly slashed with a pocket knife and drawn on with marker. I took pictures of it before removing it and I intend to vecorize it for the artwork library to atone for my sin of removing it. In my defense, the cab was pretty well trashed by the time I got my hands on it, I'm pretty sure I rescued it from a date with the dumpster.

You're right of course. Sometimes I get profoundly lazy.   I still haven't had an overlay printed for my TB/ spinner control panel either.

ive got my bezel and smoked glass at the ready...... ive strips of wood behind them (inside) so they are sat against it....

my problem is - how to i stop the glass from falling out if cab is tipped??? is there small clips or something i can use?

Okay call me crazy but can't you see the screws now that you drilled them into the glass?  That isn't a good idea is it?  Looks bad to me

I'm gonna use mirror clips (spring loaded clips) on top and set it down on a groove in the wood (or maybe a rail or clips as well). Along the sides of the cab there will be wood strips supporting the wood also.

The clips will be in the area behind the marquee so they will be hidden from view. These clips hold mirrors in place while you clean them, so I assume they will be able to hold the glass on a cab as well.

To take it out, I'll remove the CP, lift the glass (the springs allow the glass to move straight up) out of the groove and then slide it forward and down (the top of the glass will slide along the side strips) and when its slid sufficiently down (so I see the top) I will be able to take it out.

I haven't tried this yet though
