Which Control Panel Layout & Why?
« on: June 14, 2004, 10:32:19 am »
The image should be attached below, I guess you can't attach a e-mail to a poll message. Anyway, Ive decided on the following two layouts, the difference is in the rotation of the player controls. Layout A is 90deg to the front, and Layout B is oriented at a angle to the CP.
I've read a lot of messages discussing being lined up with the monitor etc.. and was looking for some input/opinions on this.

Thanks!

I'm going to go with A - having the sticks perpendicular to the screen. This way up is up instead of diagonal-up being up.
Does that make sense?
 ???

Go with A. You wouldn't be able to play Robotron with the joysticks at angles like you have in B.

Another vote for A, having the joys on an angle other than 90 degrees to the screen will take some getting used to.
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.

Ahhh..... I hadn't thought about the two joysticks issue...

I was thinking more along the line that I can remember in the arcades, playing games like street figter and such as a kid, that me and my buddies. (who wern't small guys by any stretch) always kinda stood to the side of the machine, otherwise you were just "uncomforably" close. (One memory of my friend Muff kept coming back, I'm not a huge guy, but he was a rugby palyer. During one heated game I can remember getting knocked off me feet twice as he bashed the controls around...)

:o I completely blanked out on the dual joystick games, and was thinking only about 2 different players.

I'm thinking A is the best choice now, and I'll just space them further apart to get the "comfort" zone back.

I'm thinking about also getting rid of the cut corner top as well, as it would serve no purpose, but leaving the bottom cut at angle, and just rounding the top on a long radius.

This things starting to look more and more like a slikstik every time I mess with it! ;)

There is absolutely no question.  The two sticks have to be facing the monitor straight (A).  If you rotate them (the way you have it on B) you'll be very very sorry.  Nothing will play right.

It has got to be A!

if you go with B you will have to stand at a funny angle to the panel, have your wrists on a weird angle and it will take ages to get used to.

I've decided to to with.......

"A"!

It was a easy decision after actually thinking about the dual controls in some games.  Thanks all!

Now its back to editing the design... and tonight, we paint!

Wow, that's kinda harsh...B got voted down hands down, and personally, I am of large mind AND body...so anything that will give player 2 more room is games with me.  I actually plan on making a setup VERY close to what the B setup is...but your vote seems to be locked, so I'm just voicing my opinion now.  I suppose it depends on how wide the panel actually is too.  Didn't notice if the dimensions were listed, but mine is going to be about 30" wide and I'm going the set up the joysticks at an angle so that I don't squash player 2...unless we're talking about ON the game.
The default personal text is is "I'm a llama!"???  I guess that makes me an emperor with a new a groove.

I was thinking B as well, until the point about games like robotron, and smash tv, etc...  came up, where 1 player is using both joysticks. Having them at a angle to each other in that case would suck.
This panel by the way is 36" side to side, 16" deep.

I'm still messing around with the design, and adjusting it in autocad a bit, I think I'm going to round the front instead of the angle cuts as well. The only other idea I had was to include 2 more joysticks on the other side of the buttons for each player, and keep the angle.  I don't think being at a angle to the screen is that bad, happens all the time on 4 player cabs.

I'll post the changes later tonight after I get them drawn.
