Buttons?!?
« on: August 06, 2002, 06:33:40 am »
Well i'm still researching, Got most things sorted such as suppliers, pc specs, materials, marquee etc etc etc.

One of my favo games is Missle command, i think i should get that machine for free seeing as i dropped most of my allowance in it :)

anyway looking over most CP's i seem to miss the three buttons required for this game or are the P1 buttons assigned as the fire buttons.

Same goes for Arkanoid you use a spinner for the game but some CP's don't have a fire button next to the spinner for when you get the laser.

Seeing as i'm a total newb i like to to my research quite extensively ;)

If Missle Command is what you live for, then you should find some small buttons like they used to put on that machine, and get a big trackball, and try to recreate, as closely as practical, the missile command control panel.

Same goes for whatever other games you are really into.

On the other hand, there are perfectly functional alternatives. I've set up my panel to play defender, but I modified it slightly to accomodate 2 simultaneous players.

Got a picture of your Defender control panel.  It's one of my favorites, but I really don't want to Cpo that only plays a couple games...

I took a full size layout of the defender CPO, and copied the left hand buttons and joystick to the right hand side.

I've got all the buttons in the correct spots to play defender, and I've also got two joysticks, each with several buttons.

roughly:

j2  b1  b2                        j2  b1  b2
b3               --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type--                b3

To play defender, J1, and it's b3, and buttons 1,2,3 for j2, along with --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- in the middle.

the relationship of b1,2,3 are accurate, as is the relationship of b3 to j1. I had to relocate b1,2,3 on the right side about an inch higher, so that j1 and j2 would be aligned. The location of j2 was determined by the location of b3 on the right side.

Unfortunately, I havent' been able to figgure out how to make my computer run my arcade monitor yet, so I can't tell you how well it works.

Here's how I set my panel up for defender:  http://www.fraggersxtreme.com/museum/Hints/defender.png

(I'm only mentioning it here b/c you asked for a defender panel that would play a lot of games.)  This retains most of the original layout while keeping the "feel" of the arcade games and is useful for most games.  The unused button is used for INVISO in Stargate.  Here's how it works in some other games:

Sorry to jump into the thread, but thought I'd throw some ideas out there!

Thanks.  Cool layouts.

It gave me a couple ideas that I will use when building my panel...
