Control Panel Questions
« on: June 10, 2004, 12:11:15 pm »
Here's my plan:

2 Players, 6 buttons each
1 4-way with 3 buttons
Spinner
Trackball
Player 1 start button
player 1 coin button
player 2 start button
player 2 coin button
pause button
exit button
coin door with two slots
(coin door should function for real and be the same as pressing 5 or 6)

Now, the 3 buttons next to the 4-way would be shared for the spinner, 4-way and trackball.  Also, those three buttons would be the same as player 1's first 3 buttons.

Here are my questions.

1) The 4-way.  Should it share BOTH player 1 and 2's ports or just player one?  If I'm playing Donkey Kong and player 2 starts, shouldn't it be wired into both the 8-ways??

2) The 3 buttons next to 4-way.  Should those be wired into BOTH player 1 and 2's first three buttons or just player 1's??   Keep in mind I want these to be shared for the track ball and spinner.

3) Can the coin door be connected to the IPac2?

4) Will the IPac2 be enough?

Thanks!

1 + 2) The 4 way and its buttons should be wired to p1 and only p1.  In 2 player alternating games, both players use p1 controls.  There is really no reason to double up wiring anyway.  You could remap p1 and p2 to be the same keys in MAME if you really wanted to.

3) The coin door uses microswitches just like any other control.  Connecting it to the ipac is no problem.

4) Let's do the math.

12 buttons - p1 (includes 8way, 6 buttons, start, coin, 4way, and 3 buttons for 4way)
12 buttons - p2 (includes 8way, 6 buttons, start, coin)
2 buttons - pause and exit
TOTAL:
26

The Ipac2 has 28 inputs so you are good to go.
